A few months ago I made a cushion out of blue satin which I bought from a local fabric store to display some of my bullion coins. For the last few months I had a silver Maple Leaf, American Silver Eagle and a Silver Libertad resting on it. They are all just regular bullion coins with no numismatic value. This week, however I noticed that the the ML and the ASE have both begun toning to a coppery gold colour. None of my other silver bullion which is located elsewhere has toned in this way. Is it possible that the satin fabric itself has caused the toning? I'm interested in anyones opinions and experience with this phenomenon.

I don't remember hearing of satin causing toning. Atmospheric presence of sulfur is what I've heard causes toning. Where on the coins is the toning
occurring--the side that's in contact with the satin, the exposed side, both sides, the edge or all over the whole coin?

I have a small collection of 3-D silver pours in a tupperware container. They were all poured by the same guy--the same way, in the same shop and they
were all packaged the same way when they were shipped to me. One of them is turning into a beautiful gold/orange/blue toned color array and the others
(in the same tupperware container) are all sitting there with no change. I haven't figured that one out yet, but I'd like it if they'd all "rainbow up" for me...

The ML is toning evenly on both sides and the ASE seem mostly on one side. I think I know what caused this to happen now. Where I live there are a few paper mills nearby. Occasionally when the wind shifts and comes from the east, you can smell the "rotten egg smell" they emit, which is a sulphur compound (sulphur dioxide?). Maybe that caused the toning.

There is a saying around here that when you can smell the paper plants, a snowstorm is around the corner, and indeed we've had a few.

I've seen Canadian dollars go tar-black from the presentation case. I think the lining was some sort of velvet.
