Thinking about getting some pre 1965 coins and was wondering if anyone had any tips about going about it.

If you are looking to get them cheap you could always go through rolls. Takes time and patience tho. I have found 3 silver Rosevelt dimes in three days. Not typical because I've been searching for 4 months and this is the first I have found any.

my auantie an older lady was saving some pre 1967.(Canada).....silver 25c, even a couple 50c,10c, and a few 5c,,,,,,So I say let yu relatives know yu want the loot..they may sell yu some,,,,even let yu set the price as in my case too.... I remember most quarters had a brownish grease on them,,that never really came off even in olive oil....other coins were better......

persistent has a good idea about checking out relatives. I recently got some Mercury and Roosevelt dimes from my wife's uncle at $1.00 each (10x face). He only wanted 2x face but I didn't feel right about that so I suggested the easy math 10x. He said he'd get me more after the holidays. He has been collecting a long time and he says they are all coins he pulled from circulation and didn't pay any extra for.

I also go to a few coin shops and 'we buy gold' shops. I have a couple that will let me search through their junk silver for the dates I need. Doing it this way may cost a little higher per coin than buying $100 face bags but at least you won't be getting lots of duplicates. Right now I'm paying 15x face for Canadian silver and 18x for U.S. silver.

If you have LOTS of time, aren't discouraged easily, and have a decent sum of money that you can 'float', you CAN try coin-roll searching. As mentioned, success comes very infrequently using that method, so don't expect to find more than a handful a year.

I was picking World junk silver from dealer's World junk bins.
But that was a long time ago when silver was by far much more available than now, and was below $5 per ounce.
I picked up a couple of kilos in about 6 months. That was about 350 - 400 coins.

When silver was about $9 per ounce, I was successful to bid for some small lots at about 1/2 melt value. I acquired about 3/4 kilo ASW in World coins in this way.

Haven't really bothered with World junk silver since then.

+1 w/ what atticguy said about CRH.

When I started into coins/PM's a while ago, I started with coin roll hunting bank boxes of circulating coin. My experience was dismal. The silver coin yield I got
was nowhere near worth the time and effort. If I'd spent that amount of time working at McDonald's for minimum wage, my payout would've been far richer.

Check the CRH forum for lots of info about and experiences with CRH.

My take on US junk silver is that if I wanted any, I'd just buy it and I know that my LCS sells it as reasonably priced as any vendor. Above all else--remember
what atticguy said about CRH--"...success comes very infrequently using that method, so don't expect to find more than a handful a year." That says it all.

Roll hunting is one fun way. Metal detecting is another. I've found over 100 silver coins this year. Six years ago I found over 1,000 silvers. I haven't put a lot of effort in this year.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72
