After trying ANACS with one of their submissions coupons, I can say I will never send them anything again but cleaned blast white coins I want a grade on. I had (key word had) a beautifully toned Barber quarter that someone had dipped a long time ago and retoned in an album I'm guessing. Beautiful blues and reds on it. So I broke it out of the Unc Details PCGS holder to send to ANACS to get a grade on it as well. I dont know exactly what ANACS did to it, but it was amateur hour at its finest. Either their "experts" (like the kind working for SGS) decided to play around with the color re-dipping it or something along those lines, or their storage area isn't temperature controlled. Whatever it was those blues and reds and now brown and green despite being blue and red for about a year in my possession with about half that time the coin being raw. Ive sent more coins to PCGS than I can count and not a single time have I ever had a coins color change from the time it left my possession to when I got it back, yet the very first one with ANACS and I get this basement slabber quality job done on it. Not only have the colors changed, but they arent as vibrant and have faded from what they were. Heres the coin in its PCGS UNC details holder Here it is taken just before being sent to ANACS And here it is after being in the "professional" hands of ANACS I cant tell you how excited I am for the bloodbath Ill be taking selling this now since I dont even want to look at it anymore after what they did to it. I used to think highly of ANACS too, now I realize how wrong I was and just how massive the gap is between them and PCGS/NGC. They just arent even close to being on the same level. I dont expect them to do anything about it and I'm not going to even bother asking them too since I've already cracked the coin out. I had noticed the color looked different and wanted to see if it was the way the light was passing through the slab, I quickly found out it wasnt. Anyway thats my ANACS experience which will without a doubt be my last experience with them aside from blast white cleaned coins if I get free submissions. Even thats debatable at this point.

Wow! With the excellent before/after pictures the "proof is in the pudding." You got __________! This is a terrible numismatic value loss. Maybe there is a way to correct this. Lets see what CCF people think.

I am going out on a limb by saying that you checked the "conservation service" for $12? Required - Please initial one conservation option. I authorize ANACS to professionally conserve all coins in this invoice at their discretion for a fee of $12 per invoice, up to 20 coins. I have read and agree to the conservation terms on the reverse of this form.

OIH I did not use the conservation service. It was just supposed to be graded and slabbed nothing more. I would not have given them authorization to do anything to it had they bothered to ask.
I also know nothing extra was checked because I didn't get charged for it or pay for it.
They may have tried to do it on their own which is even more basement slabber amateurish on their part if they did. Especially if that's the end result of their "conservation"

Definately "over and above" on ANACS part...but not in a good way. The toned areas are there, it's just the colors are not. I do not know how to explain this.

Toning on silver coins IS environmental damage and the colours are only a transitional thing. Eventually all toned silver coins end up an ugly grey/black . Looks like your coin has lost its spring bloom and is progressing naturally to what it will become. I have NO idea what could have accelerated this but that is what it looks like to me.

Why did you broke out the PCGS holder instead of send some raw coin?

Quote: The toned areas are there, it's just the colors are not. I do not know how to explain this Im with you, I cant think of anything that just fades color. Id been paying such attention to the color I just noticed they dinged up the cheek too. Quote: I have NO idea what could have accelerated this but that is what it looks like to me. I do agree I think that happened on parts of it, like you I have no idea why it would speed up so quickly over those two weeks compared to the previous year. The thing that makes me think they did something though was the color didnt just turn. It looks washedout/thinned/watered down on the obverse. Had it just gotten darker I think that probably would be the explanation. With that said, if their storage facility is so bad coins change color in it, thats still on them. Nothing says amateur hour like not even having a proper storage facility for coins when your company's job is to grade them. Quote: What was the weather like on the shipping route? On the way there it had to have been in the belly of a plane. I always use express mail for TPG submissions and they had signed for it within 24 hours from when I sent it. On the way back it was in their slabs and took either 2 or 3 days. It went earlier this month so I doubt it was hot and humid anywhere.

My guess is ANACS rinsed it a neutralizing solution to insure the surfaces were stable and free of contamination prior to slabbing it. The solution then had a negative effect on the color/toning and we see the result as a blackeye for ANACS.

However I cant find it on the form where it says I gave them the right to clean my coin. Ironically the only line in the FAQ section that doesn't seem to be working is the "Does ANACS Clean Coins?" question. That coin had gone through PCGS without having its color washed. If ANACS is in fact doing anything more than just grading and slabbing it they should be honest and upfront about it. Theyre on the same level as SGS as far as I'm concerned if they dont know better than to mess with a coin that had colorful toning like that.

I sent them an email, I would rather have their response in writing. But I dont expect them to say anything other then to tell me to go pound dirt.
