So I was at my grandparents house looking through their coin collection and telling them what it was worth. It was all stuff I had seen before like wlhs franklins, wheats, Kennedys, silver dollars. Then I was looking at the Indian Head cents and to my surprise, I find a 1908-s in around a VG. My question is is this coin worth getting slabbed?

As part of another submission it could be. As a single stand alone coin youre going to spend close to its value having it slabbed with the shipping fees.
If it has special meaning to you you want to protect then yes it would be worth it, if youre just asking economically I would say no if you were thinking of just submitting it.

Probably not. The Indian cent collectors could tell you if this coin was heavily counterfeited. As a general rule, VG coins do not need the added expense. Does it look natural and uncleaned? If so, an honest dealer won't care about the lack of plastic. Neither would a knowledgeable collector.

If you are sending in a bunch of coins, I would consider including it. By itself, I wouldn't do it because of the cost. BTW, feel free to post a pic of it

I don't think the value of a VG 08-S would ever justify sending it to be graded, even if it was part of a group. I also don't see that coin increasing in value whasoever by it being graded. Besides, the grading company may actually find some silly fault with it, lowering it's value. They may call it VG details (cleaned), although it has generally nice surfaces. They might also call it details scratched for some silly little mark on a well worn coin. Those titles will scare away potential buyers, but the coin raw might not offend anybody at the VG grade, even if it has a slight old cleaning or a small mark.

Hmmm. An 08S lists at 85 dollars full retail. Presuming even a good discount, the fee to send it into ANACS would NOT be greater than its value. That being said, I do agree that in VG there is no real reason to get it slabbed. It is a semi key, but not a highly counterfeited one. At least not to my knowledge. Were it an 09 S, or a couple grades higher, then yep.

My simple rule of thumb.....Only if the coin is valued at $300+ and you're planning on selling it, than slab it. I don't believe a 1908-s Indian warrants $300, so, don't slab it.
note, by slab, I refer to PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

It does look original and there is no damage to the coin.
I am on vacation right now and I have no way of uplaoding a pic of it. I am writing this reply with my phone.

As other have said, clean the slab and let it go at that. Only get it reslabbed if you're going to sell it. OR If you are going to put it into a PCGS or NGC Registry Set.

I will try to upload a pic of it. My pictures always turn out too big and the image reducer thing does not work for me. That being said, I will try but I am not promising anything...

Quote: If it has special meaning to you you want to protect then yes it would be worth it, If you just want to protect it then a generic slab shell will protect it and it would be a lot cheaper than having it slabbed. If you want more protection than a generic shell then use a capital plastic holder. Cost just a couple dollars and even tougher than a slab.
