Hello all. I am new here, this is just my second post. I used to collect coins with my dad when I was a child. He was the expert and guided me, but he passed away a few years ago.

I got some money for Christmas and am giving serious thought to using it to start collecting again. I will be starting off pretty much from scratch (although my uncle offered to give me what's left of my dad's old collection). I don't have a lot of disposable income, so I am looking at buying less expensive coins to start.

I need to start somewhere and start small, so I am thinking Morgan silver dollars. I like silver dollars and I've always liked the look of Morgans and the fact that they are mostly silver, so I thought it was a natural place to start up again. Plus, they seem to be in my price range if I were to buy one every few months (the lower quality ones anyway).

Does anyone have any recommendations for resources on where to start? I plan on going to the library and getting some books to get re-acquainted with coin collecting and maybe checking out a coin dealer store this weekend.

Thank you!

to the forum!

Morgan dollars are a great coin to start collecting. The common date coins are readily available in MS (Mintstate) condition, and can be purchased relatively cheap.

Some of my favourite years to collect are; 1880-S, 1881-S and 1882-S. These early date Morgans will usually have a strong strike, and are very common in MS condition (You would have no problem finding them for $40-$50 each).

If you want one a month and can afford about 60 bucks, You can go to http://www.apmex.com and look over their silver dollar collection.For a wider selection, Stacks and Bowers, Teletrade and Heritage Auctions all have auctions where a deal can be had from time to time. Local Coin shows are a hit as well, but I'd bring a scale and magnet, just to make sure....There are many forgeries of Morgan dollars out there -even a few that look like a slabbed coin, so make sure if you purchase raw, ungraded coins ( or graded for that matter) you have a magnet and a scale that can weigh grams. Getting the weight on known good Slabbed ( Known good Morgan slabbed coin weight for PCGS, NGC, IGC, ANACS) and known good raw Morgans will help you avoid the pitfalls out there.

Morgans also have a lot of different VAM varieties out there, and most can be seen via a site called http://www.vamworld.com . A list sorted by year and mintmark is here;

I'd shy away from ebay unless the vendor is PNG certified, and has a good track record.

Sorry to run this thread a bit off-topic for a second, but Collector-Corner, you brought up something that got me thinking...

Is there anywhere one can go to, to get the weight of SLABBED coins, so as to be able to check for any "issues" when buying coins, and being concerned about counterfeits? I would imagine that each TPG uses different slabs, and so some sort of database showing coin type, and weight in various types of TPG holders, would be potentially useful info. It's easy to find the weight of different types of coins online -- but I've never seen anywhere where you can get the proper weight for a SLABBED coin...

The library is a good place to start,especially if they have books on grading.Just to get a feel for grades Poor through F/Vf.Since you mentioned lower quality in your post.
Morgans are a very popular series and are readily available at most coin shops across all grades and price ranges.Some will have junk boxes,containers of coins seperated by series.These are good to go through and usually contain the lower grade/quality coins.
Also learn the natural look for the coin in circulated grades,this will help avoid buying cleaned,polished or whizzed coins.
Keep in mind these sell for a premium above melt,since I don't collect this series,I can't help with that.There will be others on this board more knowledgeable then I and can give you better direction.
Most of all "Have Fun".

Go to coin shows in your area if you can. There will be many to pick from at close to silver melt prices.
