As I posted here several months ago, I was recently hired to appraise and help sell an old coin collection for a member of my wife's father's church. I sold almost the entire collection to a local coin dealer, but I figured that I'd give all of you a peek at what I had the pleasure of going through:

A-Hoard-And-A-Half

Left column:
Barber dimes and Canadian silver dimes - mostly well-worn common dates, including a 1904-S
Morgan dollars - G-VF condition of nearly every year; about $100 face.

Left Middle column:
2 1964 mint sets, 2 random type sets
Quarters - Almost entirely 1940-1964 Washington quarters, plus a few well-worn Barbers and SLQ's. About $50 face
Peace dollars - Almost entirely 1922 & 23, with a hefty smattering of AU/BU 23s. About $150 face.

Right Middle column:
Indian Head cents - Mostly 1900-1908 in low grades
40% Kennedy halves - $19 face
1964 Kennedy halves - $43 face, mostly BU
Walker halves - $25 face, mostly 1935-47 and well worn
Franklin halves - $30 face, all circulated

Right column:
90% Roosie dimes - About $40 face, all junk silver
Merc Dimes - About $75 face, all 1935-1945
Miscellaneous dimes - About $15 face, including some earlier Mercs, a few Barbers, and a full roll of BU 1960-P Roosevelt dimes.

And of course I was compensated for my labor:
A-Hoard-And-A-Half

So how much did you raise for the church member from the sale of the coins? Also, what did you calculate as the FMV or grey sheet value? Always curious what percentage of FMV coin shops pay for a collection. I've been told by my local shop owner that they like to pay 70% of grey sheet as they hope to turn a profit on the transaction.

All total, the collection sold for just under $9,000. I sold about 40 of the better Peace and Morgan dollars to my grandfather, who was the one who got me started on collecting in the first place.

The dealer paid just shy of $8K for the bulk of the collection, although there were some coins that I simply could not accept his offer for. He paid $18-20 each for all the Morgans, 16-20 each for all the Peace, and 12x face for the junk silver. He said he couldn't even pay melt for the Barber coins on account of their condition (no way in heck I'm letting a 1904-S dime go for $1.00!), and he only offered melt for the mint sets and roll of BU silver dimes. He only offered face value for the Canadian silver, so those came back with me as well. She insisted that I keep them as payment for finding the best dealer to sell to (there were 2 others who refused to pay more than melt for any of the coins), so they will be heading to a new home once silver spot goes up again.

And I bought a fair chunk of the collection for myself, including some Ike dollars, wheat pennies, Buffalo nickels, and some nicer stuff that was only "worth" face value (AU copper cents, 40s-50s nickels, BU State Quarters). All of that was maybe $60.

it's good that they knew to ask you for assistance.

I've been asked to appraise coins but nothing like this.

I'd love to assist in sorting out a collection like that someday.

Glad you could help out the church member.
