So I randomly ran across this ebay listing. What do your eyes tell you when you see the ebay coin--compared to a certified MS coin on the right? Note: there is only one size of date punch for 1901.

I'm no expert but... at first it looked pretty fake but then I realized I was looking at the shadows and highlights all wrong. It looks pretty dang good to me except how is that date raised so much? It's casting a huge shadow

Granted the lighting is different, but check out the physical space between the date, the bust and the denticles on the left. You're right--the numerals sit very high off the fields--and they are larger than the certified coin.

I also see differences in the lettering, thicker and not quite the same as the genuine coin. My guess is Chinese fake.

It might seem counterintuitive to fake common-date IHCs, but perhaps they know there will be much less scrutiny--and still a hefty profit margin?

Wow this seller has a few questionable coins for sale. The lettering on this looks pretty thick. Take the "D" in "UNITED" for example. Also the neck/chest under the necklace looks quite big as well...

I wonder how many people have been duped by this seller without even knowing it.
Has anyone here reported this seller?

The date is wrong, it is raised way to much. It's pretty obvious right beside a genuine example. I say that this is a fake.

People always question why you would fake a common date when you can make so much more faking a key date. Sure you can make a lot more on the key, but that key date is going to get a lot of close scrutiny and they will be discovered quickly. Also there are a LOT more collectors who can afford to buy a MS common date than a MS key date so you can sell a whole lot more common MS fakes than you can keys and you are a lot less likely to get caught selling fakes.

Going to the ebay listing and looking at the reverse, whoever made this coin, if fake, sure did a great job of details. And true the date is wrong for size. Much of the lettering on the Obverse is to close to the rim. However, sometimes I wonder just how much details were kept at the Mints a hundred years ago. Could this be a variety? Probably not but sure a nice fake.

Nice fake, but there are so many details that are wrong. In addition to all the other details already pointed out just look at the end of the Liberty headband, on the real coin the end is almost parallel to the horizontal, on the fake it's clearly at an angle. The ear lobe is also very different from one to the other.
