Hello all, I'm trying to determine if I scored big on this one. I have never heard of counterfeit silver 3 cents but after purchasing a small collection there were a number of common counterfeits in there which which makes me worry about this one. The details look great, the size is correct, the weight seems correct too (.8 grams). I have never heard of fake 3 cents so I don't know. Thoughts? Mike

The date looks odd to me, too thin. But it could be normal for that date.

This is the picture of this date from the PCGS Coin Facts page. I agree with Fuzzy that the date on yours looks way off.

I am my no means an expert on United States 3 cents, but I pulled mine out and the lettering on the date is different. My '6' had a nub at the top, yours doesn't and the whole style is much thinner on your coin. The '8' on your piece also looks top heavy. But that could be a scanning artifact.
Some of the wear looks odd to me. The details on "United States of America" seem worn or mushy, but the date is very clear. The arrows under the 'III' also have some odd wear on them, or it could be a weak strike.

Ooh. That's not good. While I'm not surprised it is fake coming from the lot, I didn't know there were fakes of hue here out there!

I have seen a fake 3 cent online, but all lettering was mushy. Yours is a much better fake.

with the others...the date alone nails this as a copy. Dates on US 19th C. coins are never that wiry.

If it wasn't for that date it would pass IMO. Not a big deal though. I didn't pay much for the lot.

That date is all wrong and the weak details in the shield and arrow on the reverse look to be a very weak strike or, more likely, a counterfeit. I have 1 Type 3 in about the same state of wear. You can see how the wear on the details look very different. The rim also look a bit weird to me, but I'm not sure. Sorry, that would have been a nice coin to have! Ben

Look at it this way, now you have a civil war counterfeit, double collectable: coins and war. Remember if the glass is only half full it gets hard to float aluminum coins.
