I got this from a guy at the swap meet this morning. I asked him where it was from, and how much he wanted for it. He said he had not done the research on it yet and was hesitant to sell it. I asked if he would take $30 and he said if I was happy with it he could live with it. I figured that was in the low ballpark for a coin like this, so I bought it.
I told him I thought it was apretty coin and would have fun researching it.
So once I looked it up, I noticed a few things that need answering.

1.) World Coins says the weight is 27.07 g, mine weighs 26.60 g. Is this a reasonable weight difference with wear to still call it valid?

2.) I noticed that this coin looks like it was overstuck over another coin. See the word "Ind" with the bottom of a frame. The frame continues through the center of the design in the coin.
You can see the last pic shows the point of the frame and then it is square above that at a 90 degree to the original center design.
There is also an 1800's date underneath the date now on the coin (possibly looks like 1813?), but it is in a differnt place. Anyone care to try and figure out what the other coin they overstruck was?

3.) Does this increase the value of this coin?

4.) Can anyone give me a relative value and grade with this overstrike in mind?

Here are some pics.
Thanks!!

Most of these coins are struck on host coins, it does not really affect value. As far as the host coin, most likely a Mexico City or Lima issue 8 reales. Can be other mints, but these two are the most common. Often the mint marks of the host coin cannot be distinguished. It's a very nice grade, $30 is low-ball. The weight is not concerning, likely the host coin had some wear.

There is nothing unusual about this type of coin. The reason behind this overstriking event was that a lot of foreign coins were floating around in Brazil back then. When Brazil became independent from Portugal, the quickest way to get rid of foreign currencies is to overstrike them, rather than melting them down and making fresh coins.

More can be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_real_(old)

30 dollars is definitely way too cheap. Could be worth in hundred dollar mark.
