When you have doubling on the MM & date in the same direction, it is most likely MD. This rule applies to 1989 and earlier coins.

also - you could refer to some online sources. coppercoins.com is one of the more user friendly and comprehensive. (there are others available). his site lists 2 RPM,s. one listed as "west", the other listed as "south". the south one does not have photos. yours would be north or north east. not to say that you couldn't,t find one that hasn't been listed yet. but I am in the MD camp on this one...

This coin has doubling in 2 directions. Both are shelf-like, the southeast is MD; not so sure about the north. Better photos (no flash), might help if Wiles has photos of rpm 1 in his book. I don't have that book, mine ends at 1958.

South east on date and mint mark is Die Deterioration. The Machine Doubling is interesting on this one. I would keep it anyway. Mark it as machine doubled. But check to see if the Machine Doubling is rounded or flat? The image make us think it is rounded. But it is possible to vary during the strike.

Taking another look: Is this a proof coin? If so it may have been struck slightly off the second strike. It is referred to as "Strike doubling." Another form of Machine Doubling. The die is normal, the strike is slightly different.
