Sometimes, you DON'T want help from a cat. Like when he gets in the way of the computer screen or steps on a 'repeat' key and messes up one's message. Ah, children can be trying at times ...

Quote:I don't buy the War Nickels. To me they just aren't worth anything. A lot of people say they roll search. But just think about all the time you spend. What about gas too? Oddly true but then again, what about all the people that go from store to store to save $0.10 on an item. Women do this all the time. What about all the people that go garage/yard sales on weekends. They sometimes put a hundred miles on a car to find something worth a quarter. I go to coin shows about 2 to 4 times a Month and have to drive to all of them. I posibly spend more on gas, wear and tear on my car than all the coins I've ever purchased there. Look how many people go nutty the days after Christmas running around buying wrapping paper for next year. To some a War Nickel is just a coin. To others it is a remembrance of the War. And to many it is just one more coin required to make a completed collection. To each their own.

Quote: Hey, no one said which war. WHY are there no Victory Gardens, NOW!?!?!?!? We are at "WAR" currently... RIGHT?!?!!? (2014, longest war ever for the US - Afghanistan (so far, give them time))... or was that just manifest destiny? I DO NOT WANT TO START A POLITICAL DISCUSION... But this is about 'WAR' nickels. so why is there no rationing or cut backs... are we really at war and should not the currency reflect that as in years past... or have we been at war since before JFK came to power? (Cold or Hot) again not POLITICAL... but HISTORICAL

Aslan good question, and NOT political. WWII was the last war we had that situation. Remember, we were coming out of an isolationist period and we did not have the industrial machine up and running required to pump out the machines of war. Even in WWI we did not have to mass produce the weapons we needed to in WWII. This was new to us.
We also did not have the resources machine going either. We were not mining nickel and copper inquantities that could support the increased needs. And its not like you can snap your fingers andincrease copper production ten fold over night.
Same goes for farms. They were not over producing like they do now. They were not far removed from the dust bowl years. And the added burden of producing crops to be used for rations to go to the front was a strain on the system.
After WWII we did not shrink back into an isolationist country. It was impossible to do so. Our industrial machine did not go into idle and neither did the farms. So in all the wars since we have not had to take those steps. Which makes the silver nickels so special. That is not going to happen again.

WWII was the last time we DECLARED WAR on another nation and given the way we operate today it is likely something that will never be done again.
And there is a difference between isolationism and non-intervention. There was plenty of international commerce prior to World War I and World War II. Needed to clarify for HISTORICAL accuracy.

We were closer to isolationism than anything else. But yes, we did have commerce voing to an extent. So no, it was not pure isolationism, but it was beyond simple non intervention. But whatever term you prefer, what I said still stands.

I've been a coin collector since around 1988. To me it's about the coins and the history. I couldn't care less what the composition of the coin is. War Nickels got me started in this hobby and therefore hold a special place in my heart.

AMEN Jaymon74! More than a few of us think as you do. That huge mint mark has always an attraction to me.

Wonderful discussion, here is a tid-bit about a fellow Montanan, Quote: Dec 8, 1941: Jeanette Rankin casts sole vote against WWII On this day, Montanan Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress and a dedicated lifelong pacifist, casts the sole Congressional vote against the U.S. declaration of war on Japan. She was the only member of Congress to vote against U.S. involvement in both World Wars, having been among those who voted against American entry into World War I nearly a quarter of a century earlier.
