I LOVE War Nickels

I saw someone mentioning that with the silver content in War Nickels only being 35% it's not worth it.

a nickel is 5g so 5*35% = 1.75g of silver
a Dime is 2.5g so 2.5*90% = 2.25g of silver

From a face value stand point I'd rather pay 10 cents for 2 nickels and get 3.5g of silver

Another selling point for nickels IMHO is they are dingy, they don't slap you in the face with a bright white profile in a clad roll of dimes or quarters quickly picked by an eagle eyed teller or cashier, but a dank ugly nickel gets passed over a lot easier.

OK so yeah they were only made for 4 years and trying to get a date set is a MAJOR pain, but I seem to get one about every $150-200 or so, with dimes I am more in the range of one in $350 (ok so my best box of dimes gave me 4 silvers, the first was within the first 90 cents, that was October, heck of a birthday present {October 2nd, Grouch Marx, Gandi, Sting and ME}.

Six boxes of dimes in October
1st 2 silver
2nd 4 silver
3rd 1 silver
4th ZERO
5th ZERO
6th ZERO

So seven for six boxes, not bad but then again other months I'm 0 for 3.

So to sum up War Nickels are WORTH it.

I only got 1 War Nickel in the 2 boxes I searched, so it's not like those are that much more common

true may not be more common BUT my original point was they are actually worth more silver melt per face value than any other denomination.

Dime, quarter, half, even dollar is all about the same ratio of melt:face.

And yes I have gotten 17 dimes and only 15 nickels in the short time I have been CRH.

thanks for the response but I stand by my original topic... they ARE worth it;-)

I have a big cup of nickels I acquired at the casinos in Mississippi back in the mid 90s. I kept the cup all these years and since I recently started coin collecting I went through the whole cup. Not one single War Nickel was in the mix, couldn't believe that since they were acquired when silver was so low.

Even when silver was low they were still worth more than 5 cents... and any gambler knows the house always wins.

I can't see any reason not to like War Nickels. They're a unique, situational departure from the norm like their steel Cent brethren and doubly-collectible for both their content and their historic significance.

I found him in a woodpile August 2005, he fit in the palm of my hand, now he's 3 foot long and over 13 pounds!

And likes to ride on my shoulders!

I agree 100%. The last box I did I pulled 2 wars but no Buffalos. It tends to be one or the other for me.

My son has helped me on a few boxes and he has found two total so far. He LOVED it. He checks on them all the time when he is with me.

I don't buy the War Nickels. To me they just aren't worth anything.

A lot of people say they roll search. But just think about all the time you spend.
What about gas too?

Not sure how you can say that. They are 35% silver. They are unique. NO OTHER nickels have had silver in them. The reason for the silver is big history. To say they are not worth anything is awfully narrow minded.

Well do you go to the bank more than once a month? If you are out shopping and a branch is near why not stop in and grab a couple rolls. Ask at the gas station, these rolls are not confined to bank vaults with armed ninja warriors guarding it 24/7

YES... I admit I am obsessive find me a 'Collector' that is not a little bit too. Doing $500 in nickels every month is a little extreme and the cost of gas... but I have had back problems for most of my life.

So I can spend hundreds on Physical Therapists and gym memberships, and still use the gas to get there.

The general rule on exercise is low reps, high weight gives you muscle mass, low weight high reps is for muscle tone, a box of nickels is 22 pounds (10 kg) each nickel is 5 grams. Getting it from bank to car, car to house and then back to bank is the high weight low rep side then there is the fun of opening and hoping and stacking and scoping... (did Dr. Seuss ever write a book on CRH?). Sorting into different piles works the arms and back and an added bonus, I'm not being lazy watching TV with bad posture... ('cus it feels good to be lazy and stretch out, right?)

This may seem childish but am I REALLY the only one that has taken an old Indian Head and a 2005 and slammed the buffalo's heads TOGEATHER... I'm convinced they made the new one face the other way just so you could do that.
( I can't make the frustrated head hitting wall go backwards..)
