Hello ,

I need a little help trying to attribute this coin. I've looked around online and it seems to be a Snow-1. Can anyone confirm this? If you need a close up of an area let me know and I'll try to get a better picture. Thank-you.

That's what it looks like from here, a Snow 1 re-punched date. I just sold one on ebay, not near as nice as yours though. One like that should bring a whole lot more than the 61.00 I got for mine...

There are 3 similar Snow varieties for the 1864 L (S1, S2, S7). All 3 have wide repunching of the 1 and 8, and less on the 6 and 4. S2 can be eliminated because the digits are closer to the bust point than the S1 and S7. The differences between S1 and S7 are very subtle, and have to do with die cracks and lines, and Cuds at various die stages. I cannot see any of these in your photo. Close ups might help. Snow also states that S7 is very rare and hasn't been seen in uncirculated grades. Based on that I would guess your coin to be an S1.

Any specific magnified areas that I could take pictures of that might help a bit more. I looked it over and I don't see any die cracks, however the reverse shield is weak on the right half.

John1, that was the website that I compared my example to and concluded the Snow-1. Thank-you for the link though. I was just looking for reassurance that I was correct based on a photo.

Snow's attribution guide states for
S1 OBV
Die stage A- vert. line to left of date
B- die crack through bottom of "OF AM"
C- die lines & cracks fade, new die crack from
bust point to 'U' in UNITED. Rim Cud above
'IT'
S1 REV die crack from rim at 11:00 through wreath

S7 OBV stage B die crack base of '1' into denticles at 7:00
C rim Cud above 'NIT'

S7 REV B die crack from rim at 11:00 along outer
edge of wreath to 9:00

Hopes this helps, but as I stated before S7 has not been found in uncirculated grades

Oh yeah--that's a nice RPD, especially since it looks MS! That one definitely carries a premium.
I would check it against my Snow books, but I'm currently traveling for holidays.

beaglebailey thanks for the snow details!
DVCollector thanks-you, I graded it MS63, there is luster there I just can't capture in my photo's.

I see what looks to be a die crack going from her bust to the you in UNITED. It also looks like the whole motto is doubled but I could be crazy!

Here is one 20X magnified of the date, and the red arrow shows what I believe to be the die crack?

Here is an image of letters ICA in AMERICA that appear to be doubled.. This is also 20X magnified. The rest of the motto seems to be similarly doubled also
