I have a 1906 25 cent piece in good condition
Is there a easy way to tell a large crown
from a small crown?

yes , the line above the date is different, also if you look at a 1905 ( small crown ) it will have the same crown vs a 1904 it does not..

Pics on ebay are great for comparison purposes.
There is also a difference in the lining of the crown, sometimes difficult to see on worn coins.i

EVII small crown (in this case, from 1902):
1906-Small-Crown

1st circle: considerable distance between leaf and crown point
2nd circle: fairly even curve in the velvet on the right side of the crown (yeah, pretty impossible to see on a well-worn coin)
3rd circle: considerable distance between leaf and crown point

EVII large crown:
1906-Small-Crown

1st circle: leaf almost touches crown
2nd circle: big dip in velvet on right side of crown (probably not visible on a well-worn coin)
3rd circle: smaller distance between leaf and crown point

The "dip" in the velvet as shown in the posted photo is the clearest diagnostic for the Large Crown if you ask me. The Small Crown does not have it.

More and more of the Small Crown pieces have been coming to light in the last 5 or 6 years and so I'm thinking that they might not qualify as rare anymore. I bought one when there were less than 30 examples known at the time. Seeing 5 on ebay does not surprise me at all.

Finding one that is in decent condition is the real challenge from what I can tell. I'm thinking that I read somewhere that the finest known Small Crown is only an AU55.
