Perhaps, this is a dumb question, and maybe I should have just asked my dad (sorry Papa!) but I thought I would get a wide variety of input... The Postal Commemorative Society is offering a series of 25 Morgan and Peace silver dollars. Each comes on an individual panel, each with the history of the coin, etc. The collection has pre-selected coins (as in, the collector doesn't choose the coins themselves). What I am wondering is two-fold. First, has anyone ever received coins from the Postal Commemorative Society? Second, have you seen information about this collection and believe it is worthwhile, or would it be better to just collect some of the Morgan and Peace silver dollars independently? Thanks for any and all input!

I don't know what the Postal Commemorative Society is, but I think you would get your best bang for your buck by buying them independently.

I accidentally got a folder on Walking Liberty halves put out by the Postal Commemorative Society. It was done in 1994 and I got the partial set as someone had cherry-picked the best dates - I got something like 1935 to 1944. But the idea sounds the same as for you - each page is a year and they talk about the main events. Besides the Walker half, mine also had a stamp from that year.

In my case, the coins were cleaned. Not harshly or excessively, but cleaned none-the-less. The condition ranged from AG+ to Fine, but all looked very "clean".

I actually got the album at a price that was below melt for the Walkers, so I couldn't complain. I don't know what they're charging for the morgans/Peace dollars, but I can't imagine they're worth a big premium.

As a side note, I searched high and low on the Internet and could find virtually nothing out about the Postal Commemorative Society, but I do believe they are associated with one of the "mints".

http://www.mbi-inc.com/

quote:
MBI began business in 1969 under the name The Danbury Mint, which was then a subsidiary of Glendinning Companies. The company was the brainchild of Ted Stanley (MBI's current Chairman) and a small team of experienced marketing managers. Its mission was to market fine collectibles directly to the consumer, and its first product was a series of 21 medals commemorating the historic 1969 moon landing. The series was an outstanding success, and the Danbury Mint's product line later expanded to include jewelry, sports collectibles, die-cast automobiles and other heirloom-quality collectibles.

A second MBI division, the Postal Commemorative Society (PCS), was born in 1970. PCS began by marketing U.S. First Day of Issue Covers, and over the course of the next decade became the largest organization in the philatelic field. The company today offers a wide selection of postage stamps and sheets, coins and special commemorative covers and programs.
Rest in Peace

My dealings with Postal Commemorative Society were positive.

I usually don't collect stamps, but several years ago the company offered panels which included information about each President, as well as new stamps which were either issued during his term in office, or were about him and an event during his presidency.

I completed the collection, and it is one of my favorites.

The quality of coins you would receive probably wouldn't be too great, but why not try a panel or two and see if you like it.

Note: That's advice from Medicmichelle's dad!

If you can get the panels for about $13 apiece, including shipping, you're probably ok. Most likely what you will get for each year will be a cleaned XF to AU coin worth about $10 or so as melt (because of the cleaning)
