All, A kind person from CCF has sent me a Littleton LT-7070 coin album. It is version which does not have spot for the State Quarter or the gold page(s). I have been trying to decide if I want to start putting coins in the album or not since I doubt that I will ever be able to complete it since the price of some of the coins and the logistics of acquring some of them will be a challenge since I am in the UK. I have seen pictures on CCF of completed albums and they do look nice. Do people start these albums knowing that the album will most likely never be completed? For example, I figure that two Liberty Seated dollar in low grade coins can easily account for 25% of the cost of all of the coins. Thanks, Ken

People always start them with the hope of filling them, but with the deep down knowledge that they probably never will. The fun is in the hunt and the hope , sometimes completion has kind of an empty feeling. Since I am home on a snow day with the kids, I will equate it to what I am doing now.(playing video games) No one wants to buy a video game that they can complete in a day/month. The best games are the ones that you can keep playing for a long time while making progress but never completely beating.

It will take the average person a few years to complete......I've filled roughly half the holes in my US Type Set (86 holes....I've filled 44)....I work on it when I can and only with coins I really like. I have no timeframe on it's completion, but it's worth investing the time and money! The wealth of knowledge you gain is very impactful.

What is in the Littleton 7070? I am a huge type collector and can tell you wants in the Dansco 7070. the whitman type, the whitman 20th century type, the whitman 20th and 21st century type, the Littleton 20th century type. But never looked into the Littleton type set. From my experience the Littleton is the simplest of the 20th century type sets (Whitman's is 39 coins for the 20th Century and 40 for the 20th and 21st Century while Littletons 20th Century is only 29 coins for the 20th century) not sure how there type set. I know that the Whitman type is much smaller than the Dansco at 43 coins versus 76. I think Intercept Shield has the largest type set of all of them. I am a huge type collector. I am doing the Dansco 7070 (only 16 coins to go), two Whitman 20th Century type albums (one for each of my boys) and I am going to do a Whitman 20th and 21st Century for me when I am done with my boys sets and my 7070 and maybe even a Whitman 20th century for me. And as far as the two Seated Liberty dollars being %25 of the set in low grades the whole set would have to be low grades for that too happen. Low grades on the two Seated dollars will likely run you $500-600 so the whole set would need to be just 2k for that to factor out. My set is worth $1650 with 16 coins to go (all the more pricey ones) that I will think will take the set to like 3000-3500 when all done and before I began upgrading (the great thing about doing multiple type sets is I can upgrade coins from my set and pass them off to my boys set or my other sets like I might do a basic Whitman type set to pass off the 19 century coins to problem is then I am stuck doing more Trade dollars and Seated Liberty dollars kind of why I like doing the 20th century sets as they can all be done for $300-400). I'd do the set oh well if you never finish it will still look nice half full. Edit on a side not just looked to see what was in the Whitman Type set they only do one Seated dollar but holy crap they do a 1794-1803 flowing hair bust dollar.

The Littleton LT-7070 is the same as the Dansco 7070 and was made by Dansco for Littleton. I have the regular 7070 and am missing 11 coins after seven years, and am not sure it'll ever be done, but my proof silver eagle set is missing the $3000 1996 one, and I'm missing a LWC 1909 S VDB and might not ever get one, and might never get an 1877 IHC for that set, and so on.

Is the Littleton one green like the rest of there albums? If its the same as the Dansco, that's 76 coins. Of those 76 coins the first 35 is very easy. Heck you probably can do 25 coins of the 76 for under $20 a piece in MS or BU state just knocking out the modern coins and the 20th century coins. There are some killers for sure depending on what grades you go with. Trade dollar, Seated dollars, Twenty Cent, draped bust Half Cent and Large cent. On the low end you could probably do the set for 2k but a nice set will cost you more in the 3k-4k range. Heck a super nice set can run 10k (I think we have a user who has a set like that). Its fun heck if you do the set for the next 20 years and just add a coin here and there still fun.

Agree with sirdizzy on the pricing of completing the 7070.
Do albums with empty slots compel you to fill them with almost mystical force? If yes, then just know what you are signing yourself up for!
It is a great set to complete. The history alone is hard to beat with any other set.

No, the album is not the Littleton green series. For a short while some unknown number of years ago, Littleton bought Dansco albums and had the Littleton name stamped on them in the same gold as Dansco. It IS a Dansco 7070, just says Littleton instead of Dansco. Same brown and everything, exact same pages, exact same frustrations on what is included and what isn't.

Thanks for all the comments received so far. The album is question is the one that jgfindring mentioned and has places for 74 coins. I have yet to find any dealers in the UK who have a wide range of older US coins. The rough calculations were for a low grade set for the older coins. In the UK I have been charged either 5% or $20 tax plus a handling fee for have some coins sent in the US. For example, a 2013 silver bullion American Eagle sells for £23.81 over here which is around $39 which is much more than what they go for in the US. So this will be the first album of US coins that I will be starting. I do have complete and semi-complete sets of some US coin series. Ken

Quote:It is version which does not have spot for the State Quarter... and has places for 74 coins. The most recent 7070 (sans Gold page) holds 76 coins. So besides the State Quarter, what else is missing? I suspect you only have six holes on the last page? Standard has eight: three bicentennial holes (dollar, half dollar, quarter), SBA, Sacagawea, 50 State Quarter, Commemorative Dollar, and ASE.

Ah, so it is missing the Statehood Quarter and the Sacagawea. Thank you for settling my curiosity.

I was going to guess Sacagawea as the other missing coin. The thing is if a album with lots of holes doesn't bother you it might be a fun set to do and just fill in as you go. I have been doing my 7070 for the better part of a decade as I sold it entirely once and then sold the majority of it a second time. When I finish the set I am going to be ecstatic. I have really only been working on it and a few cheaper sets the last 2 years (presidential dollars, sacagawea's, national parks quarters) but I did just get the album for a Franklin half set and am going to start working on that in conjunction now.

I decided to see how many coins that I already had which were not in US Mint packaging that would go into the album. So far 36 of the 74 spaces filled. A friend back in the States has been holding onto an 1837 Large Cent for me since it does not make sense for him to send a single coin across the pond to me. I could fill three more holes if I decided to break free a few coins from mint packaging. I have the Louis Braille Proof Dollar, George Washington Half Dollar Proof, Bill of Rights Half Dollar Proof, and Bald Eagle Proof Half Dollar but right now I rather have those in the mint packaging. Look for a small package in about 10-12 days.
