As the title says, I found that a bit perplexing, is it because they store them in the same environment?

I haven't noticed this at my LCS but it probably has to do with environment,Storage, handling,if they're in albums and if they're in the display case or the storage areas.

Many collectors choose coins that go well together as a set, e.g., a date set with all the coins a similar patina & grade. The coin store may have purchased a large collection and is selling it all off in-store.

I agree with Scissel. Lots of people match the coins in their sets. Sometimes the dealer matches them, in the display, for the same reason. Trying to make multiple sales.

Because they have all been subject to the same dipping process.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Thanks guys for all the input:)

I see the point of getting similar-looking coins for sets, my guess after reading replies on my other post is more similar to that of DBM's, maybe they were all lightly cleaned when arrived and allowed patina to reform a bit with time before putting on sale, I've seen several stand-alone large cents in the same store have really similar appearance.

I have noticed this a few places before also. The person I was thinking of seems like he cleaned and re-toned all his coins. Or intentionally bought cleaned coins at a discount and toned them trying to pass them as original using a technique that produced coins with similar patina. Just speculation on my part.

Probably part of a large job lot, bought in by the dealer.
