Hello coincommunity members,

I have an detector find which is an denier from Louis the Pious mint in Venice. I am wondering which type it is? There are some vareties and they all look similair to me.

I though I post it here, maybe someone can help me identify this coin better.

Best wishes,

Vincent

It can be cleaned better, but I am afraid it will break the coin. Maybe some suggestions? I know with elektrolyse you really can make coins beautiful. But it is more risky with small thin breakable coins like these.,,

DO NOT CLEAN!
You will probably destroy this nice coin.
More information can propably be found on the site : http://www.medievalcoinage.com/ in the section 'Online coin books' or the 'Directory listing'
The coin has early mediƫval writing and dates from 820-825 AD
I suppose it is this Louis : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_the_Pious (father of Charlemagne)
First picture : LUDOVVICUS.IMP. Yes propably with two V's.
Second picture : cross VENECIAS
There are indeed many varieties. A beautifull picture of your coin can be found on : http://www.coinsweekly.com/en/Archi...d=270&type=a (scrol down)
Again : please do not try to clean the coin. Even in bad shape the value will be higher the a distroyed coin.

More information can be found on the site : http://www.medievalcoinage.com/pdfb...dfbooks.htm, section Italy.
On the same site (http://www.medievalcoinage.com/pdfbooks/) : Le_monete_di_Venezia_V1_descritte_ed_illust.pdf, book page 42 : Monete di Lodovico il Pio. It is in italian.
The differences are big ore small characters, extra point...

Dear Petrus,

many Thanks for your reaction about this coin! I am wondering which type it is? I knew there were the differences in small and big caracters. But because the conservation aint that good and I am not an expert in these coins. At least not with alot of varietys. The links on the second post doens't work. On the first are very interesting. And nice to read a little story about this coin aswell. I will not clean the coin then (thanks!) Just wondering are you from the Dutch side off belgium or the France one?

Groeten,

Vincent
