Hi, I have only been collecting coins for a short time now and came across this strange coin (Quarter) the other day in some pocket change. Anyway the appearance of it at first made me think it was a Silver Proof of some type from San Francisco, but it has the Philadelphia Mark instead and that was the stranger part about it. I had also had a hard time in finding someone who knew something about this kind of oddity. So far, I have determined that it is mainly comprised of Nickel as it gives a Bluish Grey sheen. But here is a picture, can anyone tell me about this Coin.............Thank You.

PS, I have been trying for the past hour to post 3 photo's but I cannot find a way to do it. Doug

Has it been artificially toned? That can give it a blues and greens and a whole mess of other colors, some times a solid color, other times mixed.

^ That's my bet, without pictures and all.

No, it is not even toned, it is in no way tarnished. Not even a hint of copper around the reeded edge. It looks as though it may have been struck on a Nickel Planchet. According to Mike Byers Inc. In 1999, the U.S. Mint was experimenting on developing another metal recipe for coinage, 5 U.S. Quarters was involved including the 1999 P Connecticut Quarter. The Mint agreed that it was secretly developing such a metal but could not reveal if they had put out the currency. The coin itself is about in AU condition. I would like to post pictures of it on here but I do not know how to do it. But I am on Face Book and I have 3 shots of the Photo as my Profile Picture for a short time under Doug Terry, Atlanta Georgia. That is the only way at the moment I know how to show the pictures. I also would like to know if there is a forum out there that discusses Coin Oddities and Shares Pictures about the Coins Discussed.

I've seen some Platinum plate State Quarters before that looked similar. Have you been able to weight it yet? As far as a forum, you found one of the largest (if not the largest) coin forum on the internet, and it has a lot of friendly and knowledgeable people.

Yes, wow, this is my Picture where did it come from other than Face Book. I have scuffed the reeded edge a bit to see if it was plated but copper still does not show through but only bright silver shows through. So I do not know what to think about it ? My next thought is should I send it to NCGS to check it out and spend all that money and then have them to tell me it is plating..........lol. Boy what a predicament.

No, I have not been able to weigh it yet, and it did cross my mind that it could be Platinum or Plated Platinum. It does not sound like a regular Quarter when dropped and it does not sound like Silver when dropped. I just can't get over how it does not tarnish as I have tried to do this and it barely scratches as well. Thank you all for the input, I am rather new at this. I will have it weighed next month when I get a way to go to a Pawn Shop I buy coins at and Have it tested for metal content.

@ Fuzzy317 I do not know why I cannot Post Photo's on here and I cannot seem to find an Icon to do so. I guess my eyesite is alot worse than what I thought.............lol...........Thank You. By the way your Profile Picture on here is a coin I have been wanting for a long while now Since I am from Georgia. I will obtain one someday when I have the right coin to trade out, or sell to get 1. I have a few Hundred error coins Penny's, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and even Double Struck Dates/Letters on the 2013 Silver Eagles and other Eagles as well. I will sell one day when I have time to sit down and Catalog what I have and take Pictures to List them.

@ allranger, I had just looked on ebay for Platinum Plated Quarters and the resemblance is 99%. I now believe this could be one of those. As a matter of fact, I am sure it was one of those 1999 5 Quarter Sets someone broke open to spend. Anyway, it is still a keeper. Thank You for that hint.
