I recently found a 1968 Canadian quarter at a coinstar. I looked it up, and mid-year in 1968, the composition of quarters was changed from 50% silver to no silver. How can I tell if my coin is silver?

The easy way to tell is with a magnet. If the magnet dosen't stick to it then it will be .500 silver.

A magnet will pick up the nickel ones. Not the silver. Nickel are darker in colour.

Magnet test will certainly tell if it is silver or not. To clarify silver will not stick to the magnet and the nickel will.

I would now take it and drop it on a hard surface.
Listen to the sound ,then try a nickel one. Can not
really hurt the condition to much.

Like Billfrak says, drop it....silver will "ring" vs nickel which will sound dull by comparison.....

Do you really need to drop a coin and listen to it?
It is a non magnetic 1968 quarter. There is no doubt it is made of silver.

well if it is always 50% when they are buying and 80% when they are selling, not so impressive Also you don't need to drop it, just balance it on a knuckle and hit it with another coin
