But... Absolutely a forgery. Absence of the word LIBERTY over Liberty's head is clue #1

The obverse looks odd. My gut tells me it isn't real.

Minimum of 6 varietiess of the 1799. Yours appears to be the 1799 irrigular date with 15 stars on the reverse. Also, appears to be about EF-40 or thereabout. If real that would be about a $4,000 coin. It does look real to me too. Not sure why anyone would counterfeit just that variety. But you can never tell about why anyone does anything. Yet to me it does look real.

Quote: Absolutely a forgery. Absence of the word LIBERTY over Liberty's head is clue #1 Hopefully your father didn't pay much for this. If he did he needs to re-evaluate the trustworthiness of his friends.

No My father did not pay a single cent for this coin and the other ones he has. It seems I have a mixture of answers here some saying fake others real. I'm hoping its real. we need the money.

There is a division of opinions here. I will not offer one, simply because I am no expert, either.
Some simple preliminary tests could be carried out. Take it to a well established dealer. Ask him to offer an opinion. Get him the measure and weigh it. Get him to do a comparative ring tone test with a known genuine coin.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A simple review of this thread and the links leaves in my mind no doubt that this is a 'no brainer' fake.

Oh, please. Chester was right, and it seems it needs to be said again. There's no question here that this is a fake. And if you're not going to trust the Black Cabinet of Steve Caruso, our resident expert on counterfeits, who are you going to believe?

if we can't even help someone out with the most obvious of fakes then we are an embarrassment to all the online coin forums out there.
