Hey guys I need a little help and direction on this. My parents anniversary is coming up the end of this month. My dad is a collector, mainly Morgans, also has a 2 cent set and is working on a type set. He does like the seated series as well just doesn't own much. My mom approached me about helping her pick out/find a coin for him. I was given a max budget of 550-600. What I've decided would be good is an early proof of some sort. What would fit those guidelines and does anyone know of a good resource to buy this other than a LCS and ebay, have exhausted those. Most on ebay are BIN that are overpriced. What series and denomination would you look for?

Have you looked on Collector's Corner?

Here is an 1890 Seated dime I found in your target budget

The site has a really good search area that helps you narrow your results down.

You're going to be hard-pressed to find any pre-Barber Proof for less than $1000, and it'll probably be impaired when you do. Better to look for an upgrade to his Typeset, or a nice Seated Half.

Edit: I post that, and then read Meadowview Collector's link.

That is a nice coin, dinged on the grade by reverse flaws at the top, and it's not on the regular DLRC website. Consider it strongly. Price is well over similar Heritage results.

Yeah I've noticed that I think I've moved to either a Shield nickel proof or V-nickel proof. Decent ones of those can be had in that range. Was outbid on a Proof Seated quarter last night by $10...was in 62 grrrr

You should be able to get a decent PF60 to 62 Seated dime or quarter for your target amount. Yeah, it won't be no blazing gem but eye appeal is what counts in a deal like this. Best bet is at a coin show. There are dealers that submit coins like crazy hoping for the 63 to 69 grades and then end up taking the slabbed lower graded coins to shows and move em out..... To people just like you (and me!)
