Its random and shows up best on off center pennies at different widths thats why Iam pretty sure its the planchet field before it was struck. Its the only thing I can think of.

pennyman007...If it was an off centre penny, that would explain it maybe, but if it was off centre, wouldn't the rim be wider at one side and not the other...?...Looks pretty even to me on this coin....Weird..!

Iam certainly no pro but I googled "used coin die's" as well as a couple variations of that phrase. The outer edge of the die has the denticles, if thats slightly off center what would the strike look like? I was trying my best to try and figure it out for you if you have any ideas what it is please tell me, I've been wrong lots of times in the past. The only other thing I could think of is in 62 maybe they had a couple die's a few thousands of an inch on the small side. What do you think it is?

I can't see it being wrong planchet, you, eddio and me all have the same coins so Iam sure there is tons of them out there. Is there anyone on these forums that work or have worked at the mint striking coins? I always wondered that.
