your opinion please...
I bought this as an off center strike for $20 at a local coin show. but the funny thing is that really none of the strike is missing. I had it weighed on the digital scale at my local coin shop (thanks LC coins!) and it weighs 4.77 grams. a nickel from 1964 weighs 4.54 grams. it is magnetic. it is larger than a nickel as you can see.

does anyone have any thoughts on this? much appreciated.

it also has a beautiful lustre. nice eye appeal.

$20 was a great deal!
The coin almost looks proof like
If it weighs that much more and is magnetic than it must be a foreign planchet.
You should try finding out what coins the RCM produced for other countries that year than narrow the list down by diameter of your coin, the thickness, the weight and the ones that are magnetic.

I am no expert, but I would have thought that 4.77g was in the realm of possible weights for an off-spec planchet. Perhaps the oversize planchet caused a mis-strike? Nice buy regardless.

Weight is within mint tolerances... nickel 5c coins from a mint bag can vary almost 0.3 of gram.

Your coin was struck with misaligned dies, and slightly off-centre (obverse is more off-centre than the reverse). Mike Marshall suggests that it is mis-aligned dies that eventually leads to off-centre strikes, and has a wonderful set of sequential strikes that proves it....

Why is it larger in diameter?
Struck without collar in place?.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

The 64 was struck out of collar. Nice coin. Want to trade?

How are the dies as mis-aligned? the obverse and reverse appear to be equally offset in the direction of 6:00. The coin is most likely a Broadstrike error - struck without a collar die. I think we would need to see a picture of the rim (to see if it is rounded or squared-off).

I see no misalignment. This is simply an uncentered broadstrike.

I too believe it is an uncentered broadstrike.

No doubt it is broadstruck, but the degree of off-centre for each side, to me, looks slightly different...

I think what you're seeing is a result of the lighting and metal flow since the denticle's are the same on the bottom of each side.

Nice pics robmck1967. Definitely an uncentered Broadstrike error - the collar die was not engaged when the coin was struck.
