This ebay melter was bought for a pocket coin. It has some interesting issues though....

1769A-Ecu

The coin rings like silver but at 24.6g it is 4-5 grams short of typical ecu weight. The hole accounts for a little bit of this, but it is more due to the loss of the rim. The dentils are completely gone, down to the tops of the letters. At 38-38.5 mm diameter (slightly oval) this coin is 2-2.5 mm smaller in diameter than a complete 1769 ecu, and this would account for a 15% loss in weight.

That's not the end of the story. There is edge lettering:

1769A-Ecu

The lettering is supposed to be DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM distributed around the coin with raised detail between the letters. This coin has 2 readable repeats of DOMINE SALVUM, plus several unreadable letters.

To me it appears that the coin was clipped for the metal, then re-edged somehow to pass as genuine. It could be a small planchet mint coin, but that would not explain the defective edging or the complete loss of the dentils. Has anyone seen similar work?

As Bob has noted several times in discussing certain Reales pieces, you see some 8R that have been trimmed down around the rims and then had the circles/rectangles reengraved, often appearing to be done with some type of machinery as opposed to hand carving... I happen to have a neat Mexico mint 4 Reales which was clipped down and actually re-engraved with a mainland Spain style edge (circle with slashes).

To do this where you are trying to reengrave edge lettering would be a bit more complex but I suppose doable... Can't see much from that edge pic, and I'm not totally familiar with Ecus of that period - does the edge lettering look exactly as should appear on an original, or is it clearly a non-regal fabrication?

You should post the ebay pics, they're much clearer...

Thanks for the information on your Mexican reengraved coin realeswatcher. The seller didn't post any edge photos, but you can see one of the SALVUM repeats in my fuzzy iPhone shot. The letters are approximately the right size and shape. However there should be floral decoration between the words, which should be equally spaced around the coin's circumference. Even if someone made multiple starts with a Castaing machine to get the repeats, the floral elements between DOMINE and SALVUM are not there.

My only other ecu is full weight and real, but the lettering is less legible than this. From cgb's descriptions of fake ecus they've sold, edges are generally not lettered. Though this one apparently has been lettered defectively too:

Too bad they don't show the edge, but it has repeats of DOMINE REGE, which is the wrong sequence of words.
