I am well aware that many collectors specialize in machine struck coins but decided to throw this question in. I have been reading article from this site and this is what sparked my interest in collecting the entire Kang Hsi poem coins.

http://ykleungn.tripod.com/kanghsid.htm

I bought this a while ago and have a rather unusual concern as from what I have read.

Kang-Hsi-Poem-Cast-Coin-Taiwan---Genuine-Or-Not?

This coin is about the same size as other cash coin and weigh 2.99g.

I have another coin which I bought together as a set and it looks like this:

Kang-Hsi-Poem-Cast-Coin-Taiwan---Genuine-Or-Not?

Weighs at 3.15g and is about 2mm smaller than the other coin shown.

Now this is my dilemma - I don't even know what a fake or recast looks like. Gut feel, I think the first coin is a recast and the alloys of both coins seem to be rather different.

What do you think?

There are so many variations in size, weight and composition in the Chinese cash coins it is hard to say. Problems with people skimming money, adding in alloys to reduce cost, making the coins smaller to reduce cost, etc. The script can vary greatly too, as they were cast in sand and there were multiple seed or mother coins to make the coins. Plus many were filed down after the casting process.

Both of them look fine to me, as far as looks go. I have a fake cash coin I accidently bought when I just started collecting them. I will see if I can find it and post a photo.

As the link gxseries posted to stated, "contemporary" Taiwan-minted cash coins are all noticeably smaller than mainland "poem cash". The larger Taiwan coins were all unofficially re-made at a later date, specifically so that sets of "poem cash" could be assembled with all the coins the same size.

If I had to guess, I would presume both of these are re-casts; the first is too big, the second is still just a bit too big and heavy, I think.
