Thanks for any help on identifying this. It's in a friend's possession, not mine. It's the same on the other side. It's almost exactly the size of a U.S. quarter.

I think this is Japanese katakana script, used for emphasis and loanwords - so it should hopefully be the phonetic equivalent of some English term.

Looks like "8", then "eito" - which is most likely just a rendering of the English "eight". How unhelpful! Well... what could 8 mean? 8-track? 8 yen? 8 plays on a pachinko machine? We'll have to hope that some other member recognizes this design.

It is a pachinko game token. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pachinko

I am not certain, I think the desired effect it is going for is a "piece of 8."

It reads "8 EITO," which appears to be a chain of stores in Japan:
