1787 New Jersey with small clip. My best guess is 38-Y with Fine details, scratched. Thoughts?

I think you are spot on! Maris 38-Y. Weak shield is not unusual. Straight plow beam obverse. Yours is a nice VF+ example. imo.

Thanks, Vinnie. A nice R3 that I didn't pay much for!

I have a tough time grading these. Many have to be graded based on the variety, which makes it even harder on a novice. So, would you say, VF details, scratched. Do you think the surfaces are also corroded?

VF details sounds about right. It does appear to have light spots of corrosion and the normal planchet fissures.
