So we've had a bit of snow here in Winnipeg lately... and early this evening a kid (around 12 yrs old) came to my door saying he was wanting to earn some extra money and wanted to know if he could shovel my walk for a couple bucks...

I told him I would appreciate if he shovels the sidewalk in front of my house instead.. (I actually don't use my front door or my front walk but an elderly lady across the street does cross the street and use the sidewalk to get to the end of the block.)

5 minutes later he was back saying he cleared the snow on the sidewalk.. I paid him a $5 and also gave him a 1914 penny... saying here have a 100 yr old penny...

My hope.. the kid thinks it's cool and perhaps starts getting into the hobby...

What do others here do to get our youth interested in this hobby?

Excellent story, Ag. One of my other hobbies is geocaching; what I like to do is to place a few old coins in the caches to be found by others. I've been doing this for a couple of years now -- who knows where our efforts end up?

I give out Kennedy half dollars as a tip whenever I see a kid ( under 16 ) at the counter.
Most of the time the adult is just a excited as the kid.

I once donated a silver dollar to a kids hockey support raffle. I also have sets made for my sons and daughter & their children. Even the odd tip to the girl at the gas bar don't hurt
