hello all. I bid on this coin($3 was my bid, which I actually thought was going a bit high but It's one of the coins I still need and would of worked as a hole filler for now) recently and as I always do I checked the price it ended at after the auction ends and was stunned to see what it went for.

Does anyone here have any ideas on why this one went so high? Sure its a new Orleans but it's a well struck year for a new Orleans one according to david Lawrences "Complete guide to Barber dimes" and while it is a year that kind of does a bigger jump when you go from vg to f this coin is nowhere near that. I'd call it a ag3 due to the reverse and the awful rims on it. even if we disregard that and are generous because the of the full obverse rims at best it's a g4 which is a $5 coin. it also kind of looks to me like its got a decent amount of scratches being hidden by the toning. this one has me stumped, any ideas? thanks

The PCGS price guide does show this date as being worth more than most other late New Orleans dimes. Apparently it tends to be a bit pricey even in low grade. As you continue to look for an acceptable example you will soon find out whether that $19 price tag was actually close to the going rate.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Barber-Dime...047675.l2557 sold for $4, better condition than the one that went for 19 imo.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1908-O-Barb...em2a349e8767 Sold for $6, a bit worse than the coin that went for $19 imo.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1908-O-Barb...047675.l2557 went for $7, obviously extremely harshly cleaned. pretty much worth $1.50 to me imo, I think the buyer got had unfortunately.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VERY-NICE-1...047675.l2557 not sure of exact price as it was best offer accepted however it's between the previous coin and the next one which sold for about $7.50. this one is also one I would not buy unless it was a bit over spot only.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1908-O-Barb...047675.l2557 as mentioned previously this one went for about $7.50. a bit worse than the one that went for $19 imo.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1908-O-10C-...em4d14aa91b7 this one is such a shame. if you divide ending price by amount of coins it comes out to a little bit under $3 each. I'm torn on this coin, a part of me wouldn't mind owning it at that price if I had the chance but another part of me cringes when I see it and doesn't really like it. the obverse if undamaged would be better than the $19 coin but the reverse is about the same.
it's not quite as bad of deal as I initially thought but I still think they went over what they should of quite a bit imo. anyway, so taking all things into account and taking into account other auction prices I looked at but didn't bring up and how often they seem to appear on ebay and how many are available currently and what prices my theory has become impatience is the reason. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
I wish I had seen the $4 example when it was up. I would of bought it.

It's like this, justin3651: You know something those bidders didn't - the true value of that coin.

Think of ebay as a sitcom sometimes, and you're in the audience.

That's the beauty of ebay, you don't have to bid more than a coins worth. Just drop out. Sometimes ebay is more about winning and that brings out the beast in some.

I agree with you. You are impatient as well but have learned and are continuing to learn
the importance of eye appeal and rarity.
The example that sold for $19 is a G-4, but lacks eye appeal to me.
Barber dimes in good and very good are available, but it takes time to find one which
stands out from the others.

The other links you gave show examples in pretty bad shape as well.

If all you want is to fill the hole for now, this one has a starting bid of $0.99.

Looks better than the $19 example.
