Recently I've been organizing some of my pennies. I just put a bunch of them (approx 2000 of 'em) into some coin holders I picked up from Colonial Acres. But then saw the most recent post about green gunk and PVC holders. I'm not exactly sure if my coin holders have PVC in them... ( http://colonialacres.com/product/37...0ct?ref=477)The link is the product I picked up... really like it how it displays the coins.. but I'm afraid they will eventually become green and gunky.. I've heard soaking the pennies in olive oil for awhile and then giving them an acetone bath takes a lot of junk off... Any other ways I can either prevent the green gunk or restore the coin to make it look nice again if it does happen?

I'm going to say that it most likely does contain PVC. Try smelling it, and if it has a distinctive shower curtain-like smell, than it definitely has PVC.

One of my kids had penny and dime coins in something like that for 15 years. Maybe 10% of the coins had the green thing going on. Not sure if thery tried to clean it or not.

I don't know about this one, but the Unimaster holders from Colonial Acres contain PVC. You can test your holder by using a propane/butane torch to heat a piece of wire. Then use the hot wire to melt some of the plastic to it. Next put the wire back into the flame from the torch and if it glows green it's PVC.

Do the cardboard non-self adhesive 2x2's contain PVC?

The cardboard contains an acid that over time could breakdown. The Mylar is safe for the coins

Yes it has been.. most of these pennies are between VF & EF.. so they're not worth a whole lot.. I simply like the fact that I am holding onto a bit of history there... eventually I want to put these coins together and make a few date sets.. (course I will be missing some key dates to make so many sets but that's okay)
Before I had most of these pennies in baggies.. I like them better in these holders... I just appreciate looking at them a whole lot more.
I can only hope I don't get the "gunk" people talk about but I guess I'll just given 'em a good acetone bath if that's the case .. the price I'm willing to pay to enjoy looking at these coins for awhile really.
Thanks for all the input everyone

Hey Canadian, thanks for the "shower curtain smell" tip, that is exactly what it smells like.

Not going to lie.. right after I read that.. I went to smell those sheets.. and yup it kinda smells like that so I'm a little distressed as I really don't want the "gunk" but I do want to display them.. so for now I guess I will just have to take my chances.. I've only done 1920-36... and I've still got so many more pennies to go right up to 2012 .. and there's now way I'm putting that many pennies in 2x2's. It would just take up too much room and the cost I think would exceed the value for most of the coins IMO..
