Hi, all.
I just got my first shipment of Grandpa's coins! Can I shoot them with the casings on, or do I have to take 'em off? They're significantly more brilliant with the casings off, but I've been warned against ever removing the coins (a few of the casings were loose). Also, many of them are next to impossible to loosen.

Thanks to all of you!

They will photograph far better without the case, than with. If you handle them only by the edges, preferably while wearing cotton gloves, you will be fine. Just remember that a fingerprint on a visible surface will significantly lower the coin's value, and be accordingly paranoid.

How are Latex gloves?

Latex would work, but it's rough enough to mar the faces of the coin. It will keep finger oils from contacting the coin, which is important. Once settled on a coin, fingerprints literally cannot be removed. They're pretty much permanent, unless you use something which will ruin the coin itself.

Your aim here is to allow nothing to touch the faces of the coin, not your finger, not the case, nothing. Use a nice, worn old solid-color t-shirt for your photographic background, but still be careful not to drag the coin across it.

This is important for any coin, even worn ones - the hairline scratches created by poor handling skills aren't always visible in normal light, but will show up in the sun or under photographic lighting. Such scratches make a coin unpalatable to a picky collector, even in the circulated grades.
