I'm somewhat of a newbie, I've enjoyed reading all of your posts for past couple of months.. live in suburban MA and have been periodically asking tellers for half dollars for the past 3-4. This has all been with BofA.
So far my luck has been: 1st time: 3 clad 2nd: $6 in clad 3rd: 3 franklin, 3 90% 1964, 6- 40%... 12 for 12 on silver ** hooked me into CRH 4th: different branch... told they had none in the bank 5th: different branch.. they had 3 rolls.. found 5 40% and some other decent to put in book 6th: back to original branch.. 1 clad coin 7th: back to branch that I got rolls from and they had none 8th: tried a new branch and was told they had none. 9th: another branch and had none
Obviously I am very happy with my results and not complaining about lack of silver finds.. I'm more asking for advice on how to stay encouraged on finding halfs to search? I enjoy the hunt and I'm hoping to both build a collection for the kids and to stack some silver, but I feel like when I ask tellers if they have any halfs they just start rolling their eyes at me and give me a funny look. I only ask when I'm making a deposit and have never dumped at any of these branches. All of this has been spread out over months and I've never asked more than twice in 2-3 week period at the same bank, so I don't think I'm annoying the tellers and I'm polite. In a perfect world I'd like to be able to search a box or 2 at most a month (either picked up all at once of spread out), but I'd be happy with a few rolls a week.. any tips? Is asking for halfs looked down upon or am I just being sensitive? I don't think I'm in a heavily searched area, but maybe I'm wrong.

Its not their job to give you funny looks, its their job to give you what you ask for. Just brush it off and keep on hunting. If one teller gives you grief, go to another one next time. I got a lot of hassle in my town and have given up crh, but mostly because after a year of not finding one silver coin, it kinda started to feel like a waste of time.

I do find that odd. Never once have I experienced that with halves (or dollars for that matter). Banks around me always have them, and the tellers are overjoyed that someone wants them. I'm gotten odd looks asking for massive amounts of other common coins, but halves surprises me...unually they want them gone.

In general I find most tellers are more than happy to get rid of half dollars I have many who save them up for me with occasional nice results It takes lots of patience particularly with halves, I average around 35-40 stops where I find clad junk or nothing to every 1 stop that produces something

I've been in the game since 1979. Can't stomach halves (bore me senseless). Last six years been hitting the dimes hard, they hold my interest better than halves. Place an order for boxes, find a good dump bank, and keep 'em rolling in.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

In all my trips to the bank (once to twice a week for the last 6 months) I have come across two piles of halves. One was $2.50 worth, all clad. One was $7 or so worth and had 1x40% and 1 Proof.
Lots of people here look for halves. Funny thing is I got two boxes when I first started and it resulted in the same reward as the $7 till finds!

Quote: 3rd: 3 franklin, 3 90% 1964, 6- 40%... 12 for 12 on silver ** hooked me into CRH I've been CRH for 9 months and have never gotten a Ben, or a Walker. 2 64's a 65 and a 68 so far. Going to different branches in the hope of finding halves is not the best plan, call them and ask which branch is the main hub for change then order a box of halves. The thing I keep getting about CRH is that it is a waste of time and gas... well it's MY time and how much gas is WASTED driving up a mountain every weekend to strap planks of wood on your feet and try not to DIE from slamming into a tree as you slide down the mountain, or going up in a plane to jump out in the hope a piece of fabric will stop you from being buried before you die... there are other non fatal hobbies that waste gas too. If anyone gives you grief tell them "It's a hobby, I enjoy it and it's fun, except for the times I get attitude from idiots." Edit: then ask them if they made fun of the geeky kids with coin collection while they were in high school too?

Thanks for the advice!! I realize that I've been doing well on silver % but the hunt is the fun and I'm going to start picking up other rolls when there are no halfs in stock to get a fix and keep me from hitting up too many branches. I'm in an area that is condensed with banks- 4 within a block or 2 from my office and another 3-4 directly on my commute, so gas isn't an issue or concern. Quarters seem to be a waste to me.. way too many in circulation with all of the State Quarters that have been released to actually find some silver or something of interest. Would I have better luck with dimes or nickles? I don't think I'm ready to start hoarding cents, although I do pull the pre-1982's out of my pocket change.

I've found 19 dimes and 15 nickels, no clue how much I went through thou, but I usually keep it even for the most part. I do quarters to fill out the ATB folders, but I never expect to find silver in them. I'm a cent hoarder so I do like them once in a while and I'm always happy to find a Canadian cent, they stopped making them in 2012 so they are more unique now. One of my theories about dime vs. nickel is the dimes are more recognizable and nickels are dingy and easily over looked with 19 to 15 on finds the issue of only having silver for 4 years cuts down the chances for nickel finds. The link in my signature gives more details on Dime Vs. Nickel

I'm hunting out of MA too. What part are you in? I'm in the Concord/Carlisle/Acton area. I use the Acton Bank of America to get rolls and my teller there is VERY nice. After coming in a few times for half dollars she actually was the first to bring up ordering boxes and she told me she'd be happy to do it. Then I dump them in Penny at TD a little bit at a time. But if things get slow I just look back at Half-Dollar thread to see what successful trips look like and you know there's more out there.

I'm down in the Norwood area. I thought I was going to get some earlier this week when the teller checked with the manager to see if they had any.. she even asked how much I was looking for (big tease), but was told by the manager that they didn't have any. I've been dumping at Rockland Credit (free coin counting machine for members) and I was told by a teller that they never get halfs- although I'm going to ask again. I just don't go in there often unless it is to dump.

I'm new to coin collecting in general, but finds like this should keep you encouraged. Here in the original thread. https://goccf.com/t/168092

Find a bank that will order you a box.
Build a relationship with that bank and expand your 1 box into many boxes.
