Looks to be a RPD or re-punched date, I don't see evidence of a misplaced date. Don't have my Fletcher book handy at the moment so I can't give you the variety designation. From Bowers Shield nickel book "Bowers points to the 1868 nickel as "a playground for repunching [repunched dates], errors, and the like". From that statement, I'd guess there are a lot of RPDs in this date. I know CCF has some real experts in the series, one of them will have the correct variety attribution I'm sure.

Hmmm...look at the shield though. There's the same doubling in the same direction. The dies were hubbed before the dates were added. There's 'doubling' at the base of the digits, but not inside the numerals. CuNi coins from this time were subject to Machine Doubling.

Yes MD also came to mind, I know that 1868 is loaded with varieties so there may still be something even if there is MD too. Also try the http://www.shieldnickels.net site if you are on windows you could try the Shield nickel Viewer, I'm on MacOS so can't use the trial version.

Anyone know how to move this to the errors section. I may be able to get more help with variety. Thank you

The Obverse looks like Machine/Strike Doubling. The Reverse on the other hand is a "Rev of '67 known as the "Reverse IIa," its stars point to the right half of letter E in STATES and between letters AM in AMERICA."http://www.ngccoin.com/vp-variety.a...866-1883-5C-I would go along with VF30.

The more I look at it I believe I was incorrect and this example is Machine Doubling now. No added value unfortunately.
