Just something I was wondering... have any of the "modern" (let's say since the 1970s) proofs, mint sets, commemoratives, or special releases been a slam-dunk deal? I know that silver proofs grow in value with silver spot and some proof sets contain rare error coins, but have any of the sets actually grown in numismatic value over the original cost, when adjusted for inflation? A quick ebay search shows that proof sets from just about any year 1970-2008 go for about $9-20, depending on how many coins are included. From my understanding, that's about how much they cost when new, not adjusted for inflation. Have any of the coins/sets turned out to be amazing investments? I understand that certain coins such as the '96-W dime and the '98-S matte finish half are quite valuable, but would any of these be a slam-dunk investment choice if you owned a time machine?

While there have been no real " slam dunks " above and beyond the initial low mintage enthusiasm. Some sets have managed to retain value, such as the 1996 Prestige sets, 1999 Silver proof set, 1995 Premier proof set, 2001 Indian head/Buffalo Commemeoratives. 2008 American Legacy proof sets are among the few.

I have just one U.S. proof set from the 80s, cost me $10 (at the time I thought American proofs were all silver, because all Canadian proof sets are silver). I normally think of American coins as boring, but the proofs look very nice! But once you have one modern set I think you have them all.

Uhhh err people....lest we forget the 2011 Silver Eagle Anniversary Set which still sells for double issue price and the 1995w set which sells for nearly 8x issue price. The 2006 ASE set sells for twice issue price....there are many slam dunks, unless you don't count doubling your money a slam dunk

Quote: there are many slam dunks, unless you don't count doubling your money a slam dunk The 2011 was really the only slam dunk due to its low mintage. The 1995 set was just one of those things that ended up as a low mintage like like a couple of the modern commemorative halfs fetch huge amounts in ms 70. The 1995 w I guess you could argue it was going to be a slam dunk which is likely true, the problem is it would have to offset the money potentially lost on the gold coins in the set. So while you could say it would almost certainly increase in value you couldnt say it definitely would enough to be profitable to buy the set. The set just priced a lot of collectors out. Slam dunks are the exception to the rule though. Theres a reason the 2011 set sold out almost instantly. Everything else thats gained significant value are things that were largely passed over for one reason or another giving them a low mintage, or the overall quality was unusally bad leaving the 70s an extreme rarity. Thats the problem with playing the investment game with modern issues. You dont know until after the fact what will or wont hold value. Most things lose value or stay flat and you would just be taking the best guesses you can for what will increase. With moderns if you have something that takes a huge jump in value sell it while you can. Most end up having their price come back down from their highs. The mintages are just way to high on modern issues without the collector base to support them as being possible investment coins. If every single modern issue started seeing price increases from a strong collector base then they could be considered, but as of now the best you can really do is just sell when they get popular and move on. They havent shown the ability to continue to gain value with very few exceptions

I really only buy proofs because I like them. I know I can never sell them for my money back. I think the silver ones hold value.

First of all, collect the coins you like. I do like the Modern Commemorative. I like the classic's too, but they are out of my price range for now. I tend yo buy the UNC silver dollar commem's. They generally have lower mintage's and over time the some have surpassed their proof sibling bring higher premiums. I have bought a few clad commem's, but usually steer away from them. At least a modern silver $ commem's have the same spec's as a Morgan or Peace dollar. So these will always have some value to them. When you buy from the US Mint, proceeds go the organization being commemorated and will generally cost more. On the secondary market, their values vary. Coins like the Statue of Liberty are saturated on ebay and generally bring a buck or two over spot. Coins like the 2001 American Buffalo are on the opposite of the spectrum, selling for $150++. I recently bought this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-US-Con...p=true&rt=nc and felt I got a bargain. The only "Slam Dunk" is timing. Being at the right place at the right time with the right coin and cash. Happy Hunting

If you could find a copy of the Red Book by Whitman Publishing, in the latest edition, pages 344 and up, they list all the Proof and Uncirc sets. This listing gives the issue price and the approximate latest value. As a general rule, most of the Proof sets are not much of a deal for an investment. They are great if you like Proof sets but value wise, just not a great market for those. Almost the same with Uncirculated sets. Don't know why but usually they end up selling at coin shows for less than the price they were sold for by the Mint. Not sure how Commemoratives are doing but there too, at coin shows just not a big market for those. I think those are the types of items people buy once, keep, and not a biggy in reselling.
