I'm an old hat at coin collecting, but new to the American Silver Eagle. I've started a Proof type set of PCGS PR70's and I wanted to get some advice from seasoned ASE collectors...

I'm interested in any tips on where to buy, or things to look for as a 'newbie.'

Starting a new branch of collecting is always interesting... I was surprised to find that there are 'water spots' on PR70 coins. This fact is sometimes absent from the descriptions of the coin on ebay, or difficulty to detect from photo's.

Sad to say, this is a collection that you will have great .....great difficulty finishing. The 1994 PF70 Eagle is close to $2500-$3000 alone. Proof coin mintages are only a fraction of bullion issues. Under 500,000 some years. in the 90's some PF70 coins are in the double digits.

I would try PF69 coins so that you don't get totally discouraged before you start. ebay , craigslist, regular auction sites are the best places. Remeber, no proof coins in 2009 due to planchet shortage.

Thanks guys... I'm not kidding myself about some of the really tough years. I resigned myself to the fact that I will have some holes. I'm in the same boat with my Lincoln Cents (Missing only the 1909S VDB) and Mercury dimes (missing only the 1916D). I don't expect to ever have a 1995W, but if it does happen.... For some of the years, I'm going to settle for a PR69 and I'm okay with that.

I'm also in no rush to get the full set quickly. I've got some other pans in the fire. I have some trade bait and plan to play the rise and fall of the prices. Right now, I'm trying to find a non-Proof coin. I'm looking for the PCGS 2008W Burnished with the 2007 Reverse MS70... The FMV is a little more than $700, but there are some guys on ebay looking for close to $2,000.

There is still a 1995P Proof for that year. I always considered the 1995W a special issue, not part of a complete year proof set.

It amazes me sometimes how much some people pay over the FMVs. I'm just glad that wasn't me!

Yeah... It's all a matter of finding the right buyer at the right time. I have enough trouble selling good coins below FMV!

I've been getting mine from APMEX (website or ebay), but watching random auctions on ebay late at night can sometimes get you a good deal.

Good luck! My only advice is that PR70 eagles, get very expensive for some years, so know what you're getting into.

ebay and patience are your best bet for quality at the best price. Stick to listings where the actual coin is pictured. Silvertowne has some good deals from time to time but can be hit or miss with what you get as some slabs didnt have the best treatment in their warehouse and they do the generic one picture for all of them listings.

I like SilverTowne and their site is very easy to navigate. I wanted to get a pre-order for the 2014W and got it a few bucks cheaper than APMEX. For some reason, I was having trouble finding a 2012W PR70. Auctions on ebay were routinely going over $100. I didn't steal it, but I got a PCGS FS PR70 for under a hundred bucks including shipping.

IF you can find a decent coin show, you would be amazed at how common they are. However, the prices are not as common. Sort of a hot item in collecting lately so be prepared to spend big.

Thanks Carl... I am putting together a shopping list for the Atlanta ANA Coin Show at the end of February. I'm hoping that I can get some decent deals and do some trading at that show. Among other things, I'm going to be looking for that MS70 2008W with the 2007 reverse... I am not going to pay 3x FMV!
