Over and over I have seen posts about roll searching. As I am still new to coin collecting I'm not sure I understand this. Would I be right in assuming that you just buy bank rolls and try to find interesting coins? I'm interested to give this a try but do you get rolls of new coins or rolls of old coins? What specifically are you looking for when you search rolls (if I try this what should I keep an eye out for?)?

They search for errors, varieties, silver, or just to fill holes in a Whitman folder. Pick a series and try it, you will have a whole bunch of learning to do......

It all depends what you want to do really Arthrene. I buy any type of rolls the bank has in all denominations. If it is a new roll I look for errors and find the best coin(s) to put in holders. If it is an old roll I look for errors, coins I need for Whitmans, and key dates. There is a thread that everyone post their results to.
Roll hunting can be fun and exciting or turn into a long and tedious task. Is really to each his/her own.

I'm one of those who finds roll searching fun and oddly relaxing. I look mostly for errors and fill the remaining empty holes in my whitman books. Go to your bank, credit union, or even grocery store and get a couple of rolls in each denomination you like and look through them. Either re-roll them and deposit what you don't want to keep or coin star what you don't want to keep. If you enjoy doing that, then do it again. Mostly just have fun with coins in whatever way you like.

IMHO Try Jefferson's Your prospects are normally better in Nickels than any other denomination because the design really hasn't changed from 1939-2003. I in fact I've found 4 1939's and silver War Nickels a cull buffalo plus we filled a bunch of holes in my daughters folder by searching three boxes. I saved everything 1960 backwards. If you want to search for silver your best bet is to search 50 cents pieces, however you may have to have the bank order you a box or go to many banks and see if they even have any. A box of 50 cents pieces cost $500.00 and box of nickels costs $100.00 basically a box of any denomination hold 50 rolls. The boxes ordered by you from your bank are normally not new from the federal reserve bank, they come from the armored car co. that services your bank. Just don't return the coins back to same bank you got them from, take them to a bank at least a county away to dump, that way you will not research the same rolls again if you buy more.

On roll searching , I do it everyday on nickels. Yesterday I bought and sold over 160 bucks worth nickels and built one complete 62 thru 2007 nickel book in one day. The trick is buy say buy 40 bucks and go thru it fast and roll them and sell them. Go buy another batch all day long. I may hit 5 or 10 banks all day long. I also buy up all halves , dollar coins , 2 dollars bills from bank tellers to remove them from circulation to be sold on ebay's . I sit in my truck in an parking going tru nickels as fast I as can to get ready to sell the next batch. You will amazed all pre 38 thru 62 nickels I found out there. Building the 38 thru 61 set is very hard . I have went tru maybe 1000 dollars worth of nickels in last serval monlths. I am still missing these dates on my nickel book. 38d, 38s, 39d,39s, 42d, 42s, 44d, 44s, 45p, 45d, 45s, 48s, 50, 50d, 51s,54s, 55, 56, 58, . I do save all those pre 60 nickels I pull from circulation. I was thinking about trading them in to complete my set. This what I learned on nickels you can build the 62 thru 2007 book in one day with maybe less than 100 bucks worth of rolls. But the 38 thru 61 book I think cant be done without buying coins from your coin dealer or coin shop. The 65 thru 2007 dime book is easy to build from roll searching. I never found any 46 thru 64 silver coins yet. I have not done the quarter book yet and I dont know. One last thing on dollor coins and those half dollar coins, two dollars bills. Those are hard to find and banks dont buy them from feds. You need wait intill an person turns them into bank. I may find less 10 bucks worth or any those at any bank. When I find them. Most all ones I find are defaced or all messed up and you dont want to install them in books. The bank tellers tell they dont get turned everyday. One bank tellers I know told me he has worked there for 6 monlths and never seen one half dollar turned in. Its like all banks it seems on those. I dont do this everyday when I do I hit as many banks as I can if I have time. Have fun roll searching if you want to try it, Chevrolet454ss

Tykimeister, Where do you get the boxes of halves? I've never seen a box of half dollars, but I intend to ask my bank to order one for me. I go thru quarters by the box, ($500.00), 50 rolls, cents by the box, also 50 rolls, ($25.00) 2500 cents, dimes are just too small for my "dainty little fingers", so I just stash them as I get them. The nickels have never been my passion. Usually, when I visit the bank, I ask for all the half dollar coins, and also the LARGE dollars. These new, "quarter-sized "dollars", are for the birds. Gimme IKEs, MORGANS, Peace or even Silver Eagles. In the quarter rolls, especially if you get boxes, you will also get quarter-sized car wash tokens, flat washers, nickels, dimes, Pizos from the P.I. or any other quarter-sized coin from any other country. I also got one SBA, in a roll! I have gotten them from EVERYWHERE! It's fun, tho, and every now and then, a "goodie" shows! Happy Hunting Dick

You may have to travel to different banks to find one that will order a box for you. Most of the time they have to order $1000 (2 boxes) of halves. The people at Suntrust wouldn't or just had no idea how to order boxes for me. The local bank I stopped to ask questions of is now my primary go to bank for rolls. I even opened a small $100 checking account with them. They are very customer friendly. When I asked about 1/2 dollar boxes they checked into it for me and said sure we can order you some. So I put $500 more in the account as a good faith gesture. Now they save all the foreign coins for me, any odd ball coins like Ike's, 2 dollar bills, etc. I stop in there at least twice if not three times a week just to say HI if nothing else. So you may want to try a new local own bank for your rolls.
I'm planning to buy a box of quarters next. My daughter was mad at me that I came home with a box of halves and no quarters for her to search. She is trying to put together a 50 state set.

You guys ever get weird questions when you try to deposit the culls? I get rather uncomfortable when I deposit them at a different bank, and they ask where I got all these from. I kinda feel bad for just throwing 40 lbs in coins in front of some person who can barely carry them. I just got another box today, but I think I'm going to cut it off for a while. I haven't gotten any silver in the last 8-9 boxes so I think I'm going to stop ordering the boxes, and just stop by the bank once a week to see if they've gotten any from customers.

I got a $10 roll of quarters from the Customer Service desk at my grocery store. They didn't have any halves (and neither did my bank), which was what I was looking for. This is the first time I've actually gone out and got a roll of coins to search through. Usually I just gather coins from change and then go through all of those at once.

Well I've never really gotten any weird questions from tellers. I have gotten the "oh stuff - he has a bag, who gets it" look once. For the most part I take my change to the bank branch that gave me really bad customer service. I have one teller I hate to say but I enjoy turning over $500 - $600 in change to her. Since one day I asked if I could get the halves she had sitting in plain sight. She said sure, but only 2 of the 3. Of course the 3rd was silver, which she knew I really wanted. I also use to do a paper box route so some of the old tellers are use to me coming in with a ton of quarters and such from my boxes.
One helpful thing that will keep you in good graces. When you roll the coins go ahead and put them in bundles of 10. I had one teller say she was glad I came in with all my change as they were running low due to the armor truck not arriving or something.

Heres something I just started doing. When I bring my $500 or $1000 dollars worth of halves into my bank, I ask for the cash in 10's and/or 20's and search them for star notes. I've been able to pick 8 or 9 star notes that way within the last 2 weeks. I like the idea of being able to collect coins and bills in one stop. FYI a crisp 1996 star note is worth $35 last time I checked. When I get enough of them I'll sell them, take the profit and buy more coins

I got 65 Dollars (6 rolls and loose.) of half dollars this last weekend. I found 1 40 % and 1 90 % Kennedy and 12 Franklin's Some looked almost uncirculated and one was a aged proof. Obviously someone that didn't know cashed them in, probably a kid. That is the best I have ever done with 1/2's. Have found over 200 pre 1960 nickels with at least 15 silvers, 3 1939 P's. I ask for any rolls they have gotten in from customers and the old looking roll paper.

That is a great find Plugnickle. Hope I have that type of luck some day. I just picked up $30 of $85 in pennies someone turned in. Figure it is either someone that has been dumping them in a jar for years, or was another collector. If was the first I may find some nice stuff. Will let you know in the other thread on roll hunting.
