A few years ago I bought a dipped 1899 Fifty Cents in an ICCS VG08 holder. I could not tell that the piece had been dipped from the seller's crappy photos photos but I figured, it's in an ICCS holder so it must be all right, right? Anyhow, I removed the coin from the holder, which was damaged anyway, to put it in an album and then decided that I didn't like a white coin in with all of the nice original pieces that were also there. It just didn't seem right. So, I found an old brown coin envelope that was once home to a silver five cents and put the fifty cents in there for over a year to see if it would tone up a little. Lo and behold! A baked-in fingerprint materialized out of nowhere. Overall this is an expensive reminder that dipped coins are usually dipped for a reason. If it's not an original piece I don't want it!

Just curious, do you have a photo of the dip coin after the purchase, a before and after.

Is there any safe way existing that can remove fingerprints. I've had circulation pennies with fingerprints. I often wonder what makes the fingerprint adhere to the coin and not others. I'd only find an occasional coin in my pocket change. Can anyone explain why most pocket change doesn't have prints, while others have it.

Unfortunately, if you don't like dipped coins you better find a different hobby. There are jillions of coins out there that have been dipped. Yours was dipped a very long time ago and probably wasn't rinsed properly. I don't like dipped coins either but it's just a fact they are out there and we buy them because we like the coin.

No, sorry I don't. I can describe it easily - a completely bland gray, sort of washed-out silver look with not a speck of toning. If I had looked closely enough I should have seen the fingerprint as it is so ingrained into the surface that the surrounding metal is eaten away. In this case it had blended in quite well.
I keep this one as my "reminder" coin as to why I won't buy any more dipped coins - original all the way for me.

Finger prints can not be removed without damage to the coin. The print is etched in from the natural acids in the oils found on skin. John1

And the ICCS holder didn't have a comment "Cleaned"?
Was the holder damaged in such a way that the coin could be substituted? That's an old scam.

This is the reason I like GSA Carson City Morgans so much. They went straight from bags to a sealed plastic holder. The coins are original surface, no tampering...if still in that holder.

With regard to dipping.....no mention of copper cents....those can be 'treated' with very remarkable improvements if there is some tarnish or dirt on the coins, usually large cents

Was the holder damaged in such a way that the coin could be substituted? That's an old scam. No, there were no comments to that effect and no tampering that I could see - the inner holder was just cracked. I've seen a large number of ICCS-graded pieces that were just God-awful crap with no comments so I follow the old adage of "buy the coin, not the holder". In this case I was hampered by poor photos and no return policy. Come to think of it, this whole transaction sucked right from the get-go anyhow. I bought this coin from some guy through the nearly-defunct http://www.canadiancoin.com website. With no return policy I should have known better. (On top of that I paid for Express Post shipping and the guy sent the coin in a regular letter-sized envelope with no padding and regular postage! No luck getting my money back on that one either).
