I have an original bank wrapped roll of 1956 S quarters. I've been itching to open it up and take a look. Should I leave it as is or take a look?

I would leave it alone. It's always more interesting if you still have it in the original roll. I think they now sell for more on ebay.

I'm a sucker for opening unopened items - I consider it a big part of the fun I have with the collecting hobby. Could you auction it off for more on ebay unopened? Absolutely, because of suckers like me.

That said, if you want to open it and you think the fun you would get out of it would be worth the loss in value, IMO, do it.

Darn DMC coins and biokemist6 got in ahead of me ..
I agree .. no "S" mint coins in 1956

No "S" mint "marked" coins from 1955 through 1967.

For quarters with the S mintmark, yes.

I seem to recall that San Francisco struck unmintmarked quarters dated 1965 through 1967.

I did it. I was hoping for some wild toners, but only the end of roll coins are toned and more than a little beat up. Still fun.
