This is a fun overdate for several reasons: all 4 digits in the date are doubled (probably a doubled die), it's really obvious--they didn't bother to polish out the underlying date, and strangest of all--the 1981 date appears to be punched after 1982!

Interesting how much the dates of the two years offset. I can clearly see each number from each year was stamped on the coin. Nice find.

This short series has some very interesting coins in it. There are a ton of doubled dies from the 1970s, on both the date and the obverse legend. The 81/82 is also very cool. There's a great article on these in the December issue of the US Mexican Numismatic Association. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look. I don't have one of these yet but I'm looking....thanks for sharing yours.

The 81 looking like it's over the 82 is very interesting. Haven't seen the article Patrick is referring to, but is it possible they had hubbed the 1982 dies in '81, and then for some reason needed more 1981's so they used the already hubbed '82's?
