Thanks, forgot about the rim thing and remembered only after I posted the " Dryer Coin" theory.
It does look more physically than chemically damaged. Grinder would work but why make the effort? Acid would have worked on the whole surface rather than just the highlights.
I still think it was randomly caught in something that abraded down both sides at the same time...no clue what though
