You should research Doubled Dies and read up a bit. Doubled Dies are the same height as the rest of the design and add thickness to the design. Nothing that flat can be a Doubled Die. I would speculate that the die moved a little bit during the strike which made the thin edge near the rim...and the pressure that moved it also made the plating split. Depending on the class of doubled die they are.
