Nice coin, but I cannot see any letters in Liberty. You need at least three letters to achieve a great of VG-8, so I'd have to give it a G-6, though the reverse seems stronger than a G-6.

Oh just get that worn out old thing outta here and come back when you have an 1870-S

But seriously, very nice rare coin(mintage ~12,500) with great eye appeal. I will call it F-12

thanks for all the great replies

in hand sight seen this coin is totally original dove grey with absolutely no hairlines or cleaning underneath the original dove grey surfaces. from the surfaces with some cuts and circulation evidence you can tell by experience that this piece actually circulated and was not a pocket piece as a pocket piece with its distinctive wear would look totally different

now the 1870-cc Seated dollar was the first coin struck at the new carson city mint in 1870 and most all where weakly struck with the reverses more strongly struck so this is why usually the reverses grade 4-8 points higher than the obverses

pcgs gave this coin a vg10 and I cant really complain but for me it is almost a fine and with its original surfaces and great eye appeal being so clean and beautiful color which is highly unusual for a large silver coin that has circulated down to fine or thereabouts

this again is really rare as usually coins fine and below are problematic just from being in circulation so long

for me this coin wqould sell for fine money and for me is obverdse 10+ reverse 12+ and with the original color and clean surfaces and great eye appeal pcgs in my opinion was conservative with their grade on this coin, but these coins struck at branch mints just do not really conform to the standard grading guides

but since these coins have an extremely high basil value I really do not mind this coin in a vg10 pcgs holder as then I can buy it for a few hundred dollars cheaper than if it was graded fine 12 or raw

but this is a good example where the holder actually hurts the value of this particular coin as out of the holder it can be sold for more

now a later date philly mint Seated dollar that was originally strongly struck as opposed to a really weak strike of this 1870-cc when it was first made the later dagte philly mint Seated dollar would be in a fine 15+ holder

but again with this 1870-cc dollar when it was struck it was fully struck on the reverse and low end au on the obverse so this is why you get this uneven wear pattern

so yes this coin actually is a fine 12+
