Good morning! On a recent visit to my grandfathers he gave me a cooler full of rolled, mint marked and dated, coins. Told me they were my great grandmothers and he wanted me to have them. At first, I couldn't understand the importance of some old rolled pennies, then I started to research them and learn about them. Now I am sucked in and completely fascinated!
Here is my question, I don't know what is a good price for any of them and don't want to get ripped off. I emailed 2 dealers yesterday and both offered 2 cents per coin. That just didn't seem right when they had the same coins listed for $9 and up on their websites. I realize those coins are in better condition than mine but it just didn't sound right to me. I started cataloging them all yesterday and I am going to buy some coin holder flips for them. I feel honored to have received these coins, regardless of their value and would hate to see them go to some dishonest local coin dealer. I will list the general idea of what I have below. I know I just wrote a book, but if anyone has any advice or opinions, I welcome them!
2,870 Wheat coins dating from 1940-1957 (all mint marked and sorted)
780 Lincoln Memorial coins dating from 1960-1969 (all mint marked and sorted)
And my favorite (I nearly cried when I opened them) about 50 Mercury dimes from the 1940's, 1 of which is actually from 1925 and 2 that are so worn and old that you can't read the dates.
Again, sorry for the book!

to CCF. You say your honored to have received these coins but it sounds like you want to sell them.I think you should hold on to them and put a nice set together to keep in the family. As for Two Cents for a wheatie that's close to the going rate unless the coin is in real nice condition. Can you post photos of the better dimes and maybe a list of dates for all the coins?

mrsfrazer,

Welcome to CCF

Hold your ground, on the coins, until you study more on what you own.

On the other hand ... You are the only one responsible if you get ripped off.

I love to buy ANY thing under the market value. You too?

In the case of dealers ... they do have over head, and do need to make a living.

I agree with Domain555, take your time to learn more about the coins before you decide what to do with them. If your great grandmother wanted you to have them they must have meant something to her.

The dimes are worth at least a buck and a half or so each (depending on the current value of silver) but could be worth more if they are in good condition.

Consider picking up a folder, or an album, and putting together a nice set from the coins you have. If you do it's very likely that you'll want to hold on to them.

Anyway, again
Rest in Peace

I agree. Spend a little time researching what you have before you sell them. I would suggest comparing the better condition coins to this link http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/ and then use this link http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtmlto get an idea of value. Keep in mind dealers will not pay full market value. Good luck and feel free to post pictures and ask more questions here on CCF.

edit to add - make sure you check any 1942 Mercury dimes for the 42 over 41 date and any 1955 Lincoln cents for the double die obverse. Hey, you never know...

I think that coins make great keepsakes. They can be handed down for generations and they don't take up a lot of space (until you get completely sucked in to the hobby).

So make sure you keep plenty to hand down to the next generation.

I agree with the advice given. Study the coins for awhile before selling them. Get yourself a decent loupe and learn about die varieties. It's very unlikely that you have any really, really valuable coins but it is great fun to hunt through them.
Rest in Peace

I agree with everyone above. If it were me I would put together a album or folder of the best of the cents and just hold the Mercury dimes and keep for if nothing else just keepsake . Then if I would sell the rest to help fiance for more coins I needed for the album but that's just me Good luck and as already stated research till you figure out what you would like to keep and what you want to sell.

I am one of those that is on the other side. Just because something was passed down, does not always
mean it is worth keeping.

I love keeping family items that have been passed down to me, things I would never sell.
But common wheat cents or Mercury dimes would not be something I would keep.
Well I would put the dimes in with my pile of junk silver, but just one roll would not make
It worth while to keep.

The Lincoln wheat cents you have are very common, for years coin shops have been buying them for
two and then trying to sell them for five cents. If you saw some selling in his cases selling for much
higher, my guess would be they were a earlier ..better date or one that is a higher grade.

Same for the Mercury dimes, unless you have very high grade coins or a variety like the 42 over 41
they will ride the price of silver up and down.

Chances are the coins you have were just pulles from circulation, not bought as collector coins.

Most coin shops will give you less than $150 for all of them.

So unless you are going to start coin collecting, why keep them.
