What would you grade this, i'd say easily VF and perhaps EF or nEF but I don't know how strict the French grading system is.

I'd give it a net XF at best. Note the scratch; there's something going on with the 'stache too; wear on ribbon and other prominent points and some sort of corrosion (verdigris?) on nose and around the lettering.

Yes, there are 2 scratches - 1 connecting to the tache. The ribbon wear was the reason I thought EF at best too.

Having just got the coin in hand, it just appears to be grime and dirt around the lettering rather than verdigris.

ya might be able to gently remove with a mild oil

I'd say an AU 55 Sheldon Scale, GVF by British grading standards. I agree that looks like fairly 'loose' dirt around the lettering, if you are careful should be easy to remove. Gentle persuasion with warm water and a cotton bud should do it, just be careful not to rub too hard with the cotton
