I was going through some of my miscellaneous old roll-hunting finds from a couple years back, and happened upon this Buffalo. (I remember finding it in a box of nickels that had over 500 buffalos!)

I had set it aside in a 2x2 because I thought it looked like a rather crude/unfinished hobo nickel. Couldn't share it with y'all back then because I didn't have a camera. But I do now .

The scratches appear to be rather old; is it possible that this is actually the handiwork of a "hobo" from the 1930s?

Date is 1925:

It does have the appearance of the starting outlines of a hobo nickel.

It looks like a "first try" hobo. I don't see much value in the coin. Do an advanced search on ebay for hobo nickels that have SOLD. You should see what this type of hobo is selling for and what high quality coins, vintage coins (no wear) and some fantastic NEW hobo nickels are worth.

The market for hobos has been really "manipulated" due to a flux of modern artists.

Most will tell you that determining a contemporary hobo is very tricky. You have to look at the host coin. It should have a clear date without a lot of wear. The carving should appear crude and hand done. No indication of modern tooling should be present. There should be a nice patina that uniformly covers the entire design and sinks into the crevices of the carving.

That being said, I still have trouble determining modern vs contemporary even in hand. Good luck...
