As a fun thing .. I offer Ikes as a Tip.
Example:
15% tip requirement equals 4 dollars.
Put down 4 green backs ... next to 2 Ikes. Give the wait staff the choice.
I have never been disappointed yet with the amounts being smaller.
Doesn't work too well when the required tips is LARGER ... like 10 ikes for a $20 bill.
The best I has done, up to date, is 5 ikes rather than 10 green backs. She was thrilled, and I saved (made) ten dollars.
Getting rid of junk ikes is both fun and can be at a substantial profit.

Being that they are junk Ike's though...aren't you just taking advantage of someone's ignorance? The fact the are only worth face makes me question the morality of what you are doing.

I've tipped using Ikes before, and I since I've acquired them for face I treat them as face, and don't decrease the paper tip.

The only, and I promise ONLY reason they take the Ikes is because they think the 5 Ikes are worth more than 10 dollars. Try the same offer on the same waitperson a second time and I would bet they take the greenbacks every time afterwards.

Sorry...I don't mean to come across as harsh, just feel that taking advantage of someone's ignorance isn't making and honest profit, because in the end....the recipient isn't getting the value they thought they were.

In my experience, people often find something like an Ike, or even a Kennedy half or $2 FRN, more appealing than the same face value of more usually encountered currency. Not because they think they can dispose of it for more than face, but because they haven't seen it before, or in a long time, & are intrigued. These are the sorts of things that get taken home, rather than to the bank, at the end of the night.

Domain555,
I feel knowingly cheating someone is just another term for stealing from them. Serving staff have to put with lots of bad or questionable things. From managers or other servers that are looking out for only themselves, to customers that are never happy, and even some customers that short them on the bill. Many servers get less than minimum wage, and tips are a vital part of their livelihood. Please treat any server how you would want to be treated, with respect and honesty. If you get bad service, let a manager know. And hopefully that server will improve for the next customers.

Quote: Many servers get less than minimum wage Much less. In 2010 when I worked at a restaurant servers were paid $2.65 an hour. Tips are a HUGE part of their wages. I'm all for getting a good deal on stuff but tipping a server is no place to be cheap. The last thing you want to do is anger a person that is alone with your food before you get it.

More than likely since the novelty of the item would have worn off and I would agree they probably are thinking its worth more than it really is. That said people are free to make their own decisions though they probably arent fully aware of what decision they are making. Id also say you might not want to be served by some of the same people who have taken that in the past and may not have been happy if they found out it was just five bucks later if you dont like spit in your food. Just leave a 5 and 5 ikes or whatever if its a 10 dollar tip and call it a day. They got their money you spread some joy with different coins, everyone wins. You really arent profiting with the choice since you didnt make anything, saving you be the more accurate term.

I feel bad for the waiting staff! next time give them 5 ikes or 5 greenbacks. They work hard for their money.

my 2 cents
make a trade/offer that you believe is sustainable at the time of the trade.
if you agree that the waiters/waitresses will never knowingly trade 1-2 then no future similar trades will occur with that same person.
will you willingly trade 2 greenbacks for a waiters ike coin?

I don't like this scenario at all. If the tip is to be $10.00, then give them $10 whether it be in Ikes, Kennedy halves, or a $10 bill. The joy should come from giving the coins period, not from potentially shortchanging the server by offering them a choice between what they deserve or HALF of what they deserve. Ridiculous.

I've known many servers and that $2.65 is what their minimum wage is, but they get taxed as if they were paid at least $7.25 an hour. I would never shortchange a server (unless the service is really bad) and I usually tip 20 - 25%. I also often use some Ikes, halves, small dollars, twos etc, but I always tip the full amount.
