From the pictures I see nothing that would take this coin below MS-65. It is remarkably free of bag marks, etc. for a gold coin of this, or any, era. Stunning example of the numismatic arts, I should say.

Wow PCGS online price sheet lists this at $43,000 in MS65. Am I seeing this correctly?

Since 1993, no MS65's have come up for auction on heritage. In fact, only a handful of MS64's have come up. The most recent, an MS63... Three Dollar Gold Pieces 1860 $3 MS63 PCGS. PCGS Population (10/13). NGC Census: (10/7). Mintage: 7,000. Numismedia Wsl. Price: $11,850. (#7980)... Internet Only PCGS MS63 November 28, 2006 $11,212.50Sold for almost 12K! Remember, the mint melted over 2500 of the 1860 issues! I'll err to the side of conservative and call it an MS64. It is a real beauty If this coin is an MS65 it is worth a bunch! I had an 1854 in AU50 that I sold a few years ago for about $1600.00. It was the first year of issue but also the highest mintage of the series. This series overall has insanely low mintage's. They are pricey, but not compared to other series with such low mintage's. Mike

Im with Mike, Id put it at about an MS64 but it could easily be an MS65 too!

The photo doesn't seem to show much luster. Does this coin have strong cartwheel luster, as would be required for a high MS grade? If so, and if there are no luster interruptions on the high points, I could see this coin as an MS-64. I know many business-strike $3 pieces have prooflike surfaces. This coin has the look of a cameo proof. Is it in a slab? If I were looking to buy such an expensive coin I would certainly prefer to have PCGS or NGC back up my grading opinion! In any case, a beautiful coin.

I've been talking with Michael at length about this coin. I already know the grade (even before he put it up here). You guys will be awfully surprised. The luster is choice+ luster and the coin has original skin.

That coin has a hammered strike, and it looks almost semi-PL from the pictures. It looks like there may be some tiny amounts of wear on the high points (or maybe that's just my monitor, I'm not sure). If that's the case, then I'd grade it a choice AU58. Otherwise, it's a sold MS64/65 coin.
Also, there appears to be some "crust" left over in the obverse border lettering. This could indicate an old cleaning or dipping. The area I'm talking about is from the D in UNITED to the O in OF. Look closely at the letters, and you'll see what I mean.
It's a great coin either way.

Looks like you have a regrade candidate Michael That is a beautiful $3 and the detail is much sharper than most.

seems I am going with the rest of the crowd with this one and say I see absolutely no reason this one wouldn't grade atleast a 65 at any of the top TPG's
