I picked this up not too long ago raw. The reverse gives the appearance of a lower grade coin, but the details missing on some of the leaves is typical for this reverse die, even in higher grades. Cohen-1. Breen Die State I. I don't have Manley's book, but I know that die state 2.0 has clash marks in the wreath, this coin does not, so I'm guessing its Manley 1.0 (Still shows re-punching of second star and the "spines" remain on the reverse). At one point this variety was an R3, then an R2, now an R1, I don't really know what changed. What do you think the grade is? It has great color!

I like it a lot. Looks like it may have some luster, I'm going with AU-53. Although the reverse is weak, I see the high points on the obverse (hair curl above the eye), have received little to no wear....which leads me to believe most of the weakness is due to strike.

Quote: The reverse gives the appearance of a lower grade coin, but the details missing on some of the leaves is typical for this reverse die, even in higher grades. The look plainly says "strike/die issue" rather than wear to an informed collector - the faded parts are too irregularly-placed to be regular wear. I think I'm in the same ballpark as johnny54321 on grade. As regards rarity, this: Of the three Cohens for the year, Heritage has offered less than half the number of C-1's as it has either of the other two, in auctions with the attribution listed.

I am at AU-55. Minimal wear with weakness due to strike. Color appears good.
