Here is a recent acquisition. What grade would you put on it? And what would be a good price for it?

I was goofing around on Proxibid since I had never used it and ended up buying it. The pics from the auction were horrible so I wasn't totally sure what to expect once I got the coin in hand. I know my pics aren't the best, but I think you can see what's there reasonably well.

The scratches across the face, hair, and eagle aren't as prominent in hand.

I'm going with Fine Details - Cleaned / Scratched. Tough year!

Heritage shows a Fine Details 1895-O selling from anywhere between $175 and $280 with the majority selling closer to $175.

I'm seeing about a VF20 level of detail. Under other circumstances, the concentration of darker crud in the devices - inside letters and date - would be a near-conclusive sign of past cleaning but this look in lower-grade coins isn't necessarily such a slam-dunk attribute. So I'll call this one "possibly cleaned" but a TPG assessing it as "good" wouldn't surprise me. Same for the scratches.

This one has the tilted mint mark of VAM-2 for the date, encouraging regarding its' authenticity.

So as a "good" coin we're looking at a value approaching $300, and if adjudicated "Details," probably $200 or a little less. You won't get those prices selling it raw, though.

I paid $132 for it after buyer's premium and shipping. I have it as a VAM 2 as well. That's the first thing I did once I got it in hand. This one came in a small holder from World Trade Foundation and was graded F-12. I've never seen one of these holders before, but it's not sealed and can be popped open easily. They did make sure to put their company's acronym across the back of the label though...

I guess I did ok on the price. I've been slowly building my Morgan set as cheaply as possible while trying not to sacrifice quality too much. This is the most I've spent on a single coin yet and I now have 58 of the 97 needed for a basic set, which includes a few semi-keys and 20 graded by PCGS. There are still quite a few holes I can fill on the cheap before I'll really have to start laying down some dough. I just try to hold out until I can get a good deal. So far I've been able to buy and sell enough for my collection to just about pay for itself.

I'll say VF-20 details. I think the scratches and past cleaning will more likely details it than not.

Thinking I didn't make the point about crud in well-worn coins clearly enough.

You all know how quick PCGS has historically been about pulling the trigger on anything remotely resembling "cleaning."

VF20 details. The toning on the higher points would leave me to believe that it has been cleaned at one time.
Better date.
